You’d be surprised… employee says “ticket is x” which is double that of early bird. Employer doesn’t know about early bird price. It gets authorised anyway. Some companies due to internal structures/wealth will just pay the full price

That’s a good point. More conferences should offer full price tickets at the same time as early bird. A lot of larger businesses don’t necessarily need the early bird pricing.

I haven’t bought something recently purely with the intention of tinkering - there’s always been another reason. I just bought myself a car thing from the US. I know it’s defunct, no longer usable etc… unless you go and load open source firmware on it! Time to tinker
