Elevated water table triggering an idealised 3D-printed rotational landslide. Complete with a Monopoly house on top.
A paper, presenting six different 3D-printable landslide models, has now been submitted for review. Once it is published, they will all be made freely available.
Get printing!
Recipe for disaster for sure. Add to that glacial debutressing from thinning glaciers (think Tracy Arm August 2025).
I actually have a proposal to build this in 2 by 1 m for large scale outdoor demos.
I actually think it could get hazardous at that size when the toe thrusts forward
once the paper is acceptet i will advertise some more on this:)
Just submitted the paper on this today. You can find sneak peaks on the models here www.thingiverse.com/GEUSVR/designs
+ other geology 3D-models
Yup - exactly what happened in the Karrat 2017 landslide: (presumable) permafrost degradation weakening the slope -> giant wave->inundating local village -> four people -> died village (still) evacuated
And it is not the only case ve already hae.
Now add ongoing climate change
Tsunamigenic rockslide on your desktop?
This is a scaled and simplified model of the 2017 Karrat landslide.
I think it captures the dynamics of the tsunami generation quite well, though it is of course, very simplified.
There are several (yellow) but i guess the "main one" (in terms of consequence) is the red one?
-5c-ish in lukewarm Nuuk just now.
But do go ahead on the beer thing: my whole operation runs on beer money!
why are bananas so cheap in Ca? where do you grow them?

“An Inventory of Objectively Awesome Landslide Songs” 🎶⛰️
Yes, it’s a real playlist. Landslide themed + a couple of mudslides/avalanches, of course.
Any obvious omissions? (must satisfy: objectively awesome ∩ landslide-themed)?

Why is this not on the list of critical raw materials? The whole industry is dependent on just one mine!
Also: I genuinely think landslides might be the geological process with the biggest direct footprint in popular music. Mayeb there is real science to be done here? If you’re in cultural studies/anthro/sociology and want to nerd out about this, let’s talk🤓

At #NWGM2026 conference, @ksvenenvig.bsky.social showed me a 3D-printed map of a #landslide in flattish Denmark and if this isn’t a great example of the power of lighting angles on DEMs, I don’t know what is. 🧪⚒️
Well actually 🤓
Its active landslides (the presentation). movement is triggered by coastal erosion and elevated water table but it is glaciotectinic structural inheritance that decides where they occur and why they are so big.
But you are on the nose with the 3d printed (giant rellict) landslide
and i was todays yers old when i found out (most) n-americans eat with the knife and fork opposite!
🍴=correct.
For god's sake @watershedlab.bsky.social even the emojis agree with me on this 🍽️
Congratulations Paula! Well deserved.
Look what arrived: Just bought two original hand-painted prints from Møns and Stevns Cliffs, Denmark, from 1851. These are photorealistic, made in collaboration by some of the best artists and scientists of the era.
A lot of really interesting science at the tail end of this event, I expect...
All deposits have longitudinal ridges similar to slide deposits on Mars and Iceland and a couple in Greenland (Paatuut 2000). This is really interesting
Yes - we just finalized all the print files and the manuscript is very close to done so expect something first thing next year:)
Thats's-a-lot-a-landslides
Wow Drew - you do come across some nice ones! Where are we at?
There is some wired structures at the end of the linement, just a bit to the W along the river. Maybe it's shipping containers stocked up?
OK, couldn't help browsing around and found these two quite different paleo(?) slides to the S. one has a road on top. 61°36'27.69"N 124°17'50.98"W
