I guess we'd also want to know this person's position in the foreign ministry, and whether they are a random TV talking head or representing an official position.

Important historical context for Khamanei’s rise to power

Heartbreaking.

What's the source of the video, if you don't mind sharing?

Mom, come pick me up, the best lack all conviction and the worst are full of passionate intensity.

Trump spent a lot of time talking about how he wanted to give the Medal of Honor to himself but his advisers told him that would be "bad protocol."

Doing this at a ceremony to honor actual war heroes a day after 4 servicemembers were killed in his insane war.

We have people like this all over academe too, of course, but I do think there's more introspection and self-critique about our positions, and less blithe self-congratulation.

Obv, would want to read further confirmation.

😲

(I'm not easily shocked by pol statements, but wow).

Also, it is fine to be a reporter working at an elite, even pro-power publication, and to use your perch for good or to inform people. I'm not one to see people as good/evil depending on who they work for.

Willful blindness about the political influence of one's employer is just naive, though.

This time around, we have to worry not just about whether they're lying, but about whether they're lying specifically to cash in by swaying the stakes on Polymarket and Kalshi bets.

One of the most irritating things about reporters for elite pubs is the way they hold on to romantic notions of themselves as scrappy little guys speaking truth to power.

If you can't see the role of your own powerful insttn in a wider pol landscape, perhaps you shouldn't be a political reporter.

The Onion needs a new standby headline: "(Wo)man's Job Depends on Not Understanding a Thing."

"US sends more troops as mideast conflict widens" doesn't tell us anything about the fact that the US bombed another country unprovoked. But I guess Jilly didn't study anything about framing and discourse in college.

The NYT isn't a right-wing rag, but after a certain point, if a newspaper's key opinion and editorial writers have a slant in a specific direction - bashing the left, students, the poors, and standing by the elite - one has to come to terms with whatever the slant may mean in a political landscape.

this one fucked me up so much. guy turns his life around after a drug conviction, becomes a happy, beloved, pet rescuing houseboat dad who undersells his mechanic services so poor folks can afford them. ICE grabs him one day out of the hospital for heart problems which then kill him. horrifying

And around 60-70k immigrant truck drivers had their licenses cancelled by the administration late last year, so one assumes that replacement costs also went up.

Even if you don’t drive, most of what you eat arrives by truck.

Consider the choices involved in determining what the important policy is, what the 'highest levels' are, whose voice matters, and whether they should be given free PR space in a prestigious publication with elite circulation.

Now go look up the concept of 'agenda-setting power.'

02.03.2026 05:45 β€” πŸ‘ 9    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

If the 'opinion pages' that JF refers to is not op-ed but rather individual opinion columnists and THEIR columns, then I what I say here is not applicable.

I read it to mean 'op ed writers.'

Condescending remarks about a lack of media literacy on the left are a bit rich coming from people who have never bothered to read reams of social scientific research on their own fields, or any others, but rather see themselves as oracles of truth whom the hoi polloi dare not criticize.

02.03.2026 05:38 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

So, yes, if politicians and decision makers' thought process is important for explaining political choices, you do want to print those; but you can report on them, not offer them unedited free PR spots. Even straight reporting requires choices, framing, deeply political decisions. Own it.

02.03.2026 05:37 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Also, it's a bit embarrassing when people in powerful fields don't bother to consider the sociology and politics of their own fields, and buy their own press releases about being neutral, politics-free, and a class-free meritocratic space.

02.03.2026 05:33 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

"Lack of media literacy" is not the issue here, much as I'm sure it's a reassuring mantra that people who have made their compromises with power like to repeat to themselves.

Fun fact: the dining room at Mar-a-Lago, built in the mid-1920s, was dubbed "the Mussolini room" by its designer because it was intentionally modeled after Rome's Chigi Palace that was occupied at the time by Il Duce.

These are β€œlow enrollment” majors but the classes are regularly at capacity. They changed the funding structure a few years ago here, switching the allocation from course enrollments to majors then blamed these departments for a structural, top-down change. This is entirely a political choice.
