“I don’t understand why you’re the one handling this,” Suguru says now. He and Shoko count to three before gently swinging the body onto the table. “You’re not even close to being an actual doctor.” “I’m not performing an autopsy,” Shoko murmurs, focus shifting to the dead guy now that she has him where she wants him. “The actual doctor will get here in a bit, and he’s going to mess up all the subtle signs by cutting the body open.” Suguru barely manages to stop himself from slapping a hand to his face. He calmly removes his latex gloves and only then presses his fingers to his forehead. “Shoko. You told me they asked you to do this.” “Did I? My bad. They may as well have, though, by being grossly incompetent. It’s a call for help every day down here.” Suguru can’t really contradict her. Jujutsu healers are rare and spread thin. Most of the autopsies are carried out by doctors who are also windows, with limited sensitivity to cursed energy. “I’ll leave you to it, then.” Suguru starts reaching into his pocket for his phone, eager to check on texts from Satoru. “Nooo, don’t abandon me.” Shoko turns her huge brown eyes on him. She’s like a dog, the kind that’s easygoing and floppy the majority of the time, but impossible to budge once it’s decided it wants something. “I need you to keep watch. Don’t wanna get caught with my hands on a corpse, that would raise questions.”

“Valid ones.” Suguru sighs in defeat. “Fine, but have an excuse for me ready in case we do get caught.” Shoko salutes him, then turns her full attention to the corpse. A cool cursed death to solve flips some kind of intensity switch inside her. Suguru fully expects to be dragged along for a full investigation, so he catches up on Satoru’s messages while he can. 17:02 I’m dying This shit is so boring 17:03 They only want me here cause it’s about the emperor’s relative Can you believe this? Wasting my time on a grade 3 17:11 Oh wait wait they might feed me, day saved 17:26 Nvm it’s a whole thing I gotta sit for. No way no way Quick, think of an excuse Suguru snorts, but something secret deep within him delights at being included. Satoru’s so good at doing that--acting like Suguru is a fixture in his life. Like maybe removing him would upend the entire structure.

You live to make their lives hell Satoru doesn’t protest, but in reality, the Gojo clan has hit a jackpot with him. He’s powerful, intelligent, and decisive, a perfect future clan head. Satoru talks a big game about hating the old order, but he hasn’t done anything to disrupt it. When his clan begged him for a show of loyalty before Satoru came to Tokyo, he gave them what they wanted. When they ask him to appear before the imperial family, he does. Many complaints, no hesitation. Suguru respects Satoru’s ability to maintain that balance.
