Sphagnum magniae, from Sandy Run Savanna Natural area, Onslow County, North Carolina (20 Sept. 2025, B. Aguero 21498, voucher at DUKE). Mosses are often overlooked. St. Louis scientists are leading the charge to protect them More than 1,600 plants and animals are protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, but out of all of those, only one is a moss. A new effort seeks to protect these often overlooked plants.

Moss might seem small and simple, but scientists in St. Louis are digging into what it takes to preserve these plants and the habitats they anchor. This piece gives a cool look behind the scenes.
