"Make a Will this Summer"
@worcestercathedral.bsky.social has joined forces with four leading local solicitors to offer people the chance to write or update their WillΒ this summer in exchange for a #donationΒ to the Cathedral.
We loved reading the recent Times article where a journalist shared their top picks after visiting (almost) all 42 English cathedrals.
We were especially thrilled to be featured so positively - our dog-friendly policy certainly made an impression! πΎ

A tiny carved stone creature- perhaps a dog or monkey- is carved holding onto the wall of a medieval archway. He has his tongue hanging out in the cathedral north transept. It is unpainted.
This tiny medieval fellow and his companion on the other side of the arch are easily missed. Look for them when you walk from the north transept into the north nave aisle. He is above the memorial plaque to novelist Francis Brett Young. Have a great weekend! #WorcesterCathedral
21.02.2025 16:27 β π 7 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0A burgundy illuminated letter N with a navy blue background is at the midway point in the right hand column of text in this law book. The letter has foliage drawn spouting from the top and bottom of it. In the centre of the letter N is blue foliage with blue or red leaves and gold background. New paragraphs also start with a smaller blue capital letter with red and white infilling.
A nice illuminated letter from the Table of Both Types of Law. This manuscript copy was made in the 14th century for a Worcester monk, Richard Bromwych, when he was made precentor of the Cathedral priory (WCL F156 f196).

Hereβs Mr P singing along to the Cathedral bells on Sunday! π
As you enter the north entrance at Worcester Cathedral the first monument you see is Henry Philpott, Bishop of Worcester 1860-1890, who oversaw the Victorian Restoration of the Cathedral. The statue is by Worcester's Sir Thomas Brock who also created Queen Victoria's Memorial at Buckingham Palace.

The cartoon extends of a letter L in the top line of a column of text on the right hand edge of the page. The monk student has extended the L so that it overhangs the column of text. he has then drawn a spider spinning its way down to the next line, It has large eyes and two legs as well as a small body
This week's medieval cartoon has a sort of spider hanging down the side of a column of text in James of Voragine's Sermons on Time. This manuscript was copied in the 14thC. James, from Genoa, lived in the 1200's. He was a Dominican whose most famous book is the Golden Legend (WCL F115, f.20r).
03.02.2025 12:36 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Two columns of music are on the page. Each column has 6 parts. The top five parts are staves of 5 lines. The last part has a stave of 6 lines. The musical notes have been drawn as black squares with tails. Red or Blue capital letters are given for names. The lines are in red.
If you like music, you might enjoy seeing this image. It is from a service book c.1300 (WCL Q107 folio 17v).
30.01.2025 08:37 β π 5 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0After the busyness of the day why not wind down at Choral Evensong here in the stunning Worcester Cathedral?
This evening we welcome the combined choirs of Hereford Cathedral School, Kingβs School, Gloucester, & Kingβs Worcester.
Enjoy world-class music during term-time, Mon-Sat 5.30pm & Sun 4pm π
The former members of the choir and some of their wives in three rows. The wives in the centre row. Everyone is smartly dressed in black or grey suits. The women have bonnets or hats. Some of the men hold mortarboard hats in their hands. They are on the law outside the south side of the cathedral next to the ruins of the medieval Guesten building. This is on the right of the photo. In the background is the exterior wall of the Dean's chapel and the south quire aisle.
The Cathedral Guild was the former members of the Cathedral Voluntary Choir. In 1912 a couple donated the picture to the archive. It dates to sometime pre-1895. The group is gathered on the lawns by the Guesten ruins on the south side of the Cathedral.
24.01.2025 16:38 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0A monk in brown ink has been drawn in a legal manuscript pointing at an important sentence in the right hand column of text on the page. The artist has only drawn his head and torso. He has a a tonsure and is shown in profile.
This week's medieval cartoon has a monk pointing out an important line in this law book- a 13th century copy of Justinian's Codex (WCL F78 f117r).
