How many chromosomes can an animal have?

In our paper out now in @currentbiology.bsky.social we show that the Atlas blue butterfly has 229 chromosome pairs- the highest in diploid Metazoa! These arose by rapid autosome fragmentation while sex chromosomes stayed intact.

And the heat will only get worse. In Spain we have been experiencing anomalies of 5-10 degrees in June. Birds are falling from their nests. My 10-year-old daughter told me last night that she was so sorry for all the animals suffering due to humanity's fault. It is heart-breaking.

1/2 Not so vindictive!

Sometimes, honey guides lead people to snakes or dead animals. This makes the honey hunters respect them more; they believe it is a punishment for not sharing the honey on previous occasions. But these are only mistakes.
