There’s still time to kill this bill. The House will convene on Monday. Flood their inboxes opposing this bill!

Combine this with HB 1471 that’s very close to passing. It would allow the Florida Cabinet (stacked w/ DeSantis appointees) to designate nonprofits as “domestic terrorist organizations” and you have a very scary escalation of power in the state executive branch.

'Constitutional trainwreck': Florida lawmakers seek surveillance crackdown The legislation, which has come under fierce criticism from civil-rights and free speech advocates, represents another expansion of Florida’s security apparatus under Gov. Ron DeSantis.

New @thefloridatrib.bsky.social | Under Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida has spent three-quarters of a billion dollars creating a kind of parallel national security apparatus. A controversial series of surveillance and domestic terrorist bills will add to that accounting.

The bill is paired with SB 1634, also sponsored by Grall, which would enshroud the designation process in secrecy. Both measures would “put a lot of power into a very limited number of politicians’ hands,” said Amy Keith, the Florida Director of Common Cause, with decisions based on language that is “discretionary and can hide the rationale.”

Shirin Sinnar, a constitutional law professor at Stanford University Law School, described the legislation as “terrifying,” both a license to “go after political enemies,” and a threat to civil rights advocacy. “Advocacy is still protected speech,” she said.

This bill has been flying under the radar, with not much media reporting on it.

Constitutional experts call it terrifying. What happens here will spread to other states.

We have to turn up the volume. Send an email and tell your fellow Floridians.

Florida Lawmakers: Stop Political Repression – Vote NO on SB 1632/HB 1471 Please take action!

🚨 Florida is fast-tracking a bill that would allow a handful of state officials to label a group a “domestic terrorist organization” without basic due process.

It’s on track to pass next week. Lawmakers need to hear from as many people as possible NOW 👇

The filing of HB 945 comes at the same time legislation, SB 1632, “Ideologies Inconsistent with American Principles” and sponsored by Vero Beach Republican Sen. Erin Grall, would allow the head of FDLE to designate groups as “domestic terrorist organizations.” The bill would also mandate the expulsion of students aiding an organization once designated, as well as prohibit any state funding of any kind to support a designated organization or member of a designated organization, including private schools.

Under this bill, students who “promote” a designated terrorist organization would be immediately expelled.

The word “promote” isn’t defined in the bill.

This is a clear attempt to silence student protests under the threat of expulsion.

The Liberal Case for Public Power When power is treated as a public good, it becomes cheaper, more reliable, and better positioned to meet the challenges of the future than privately held electrical utilities have ever demonstrated.

“If there’s one thing the story of PG&E and municipal options like SMUD, LADWP, and NPPD have consistently shown, it’s that public ownership may be the best model of ownership for electricity and other natural monopolies.”
