The bill is paired with SB 1634, also sponsored by Grall, which would enshroud the designation process in secrecy. Both measures would โ€œput a lot of power into a very limited number of politiciansโ€™ hands,โ€ said Amy Keith, the Florida Director of Common Cause, with decisions based on language that is โ€œdiscretionary and can hide the rationale.โ€

Shirin Sinnar, a constitutional law professor at Stanford University Law School, described the legislation as โ€œterrifying,โ€ both a license to โ€œgo after political enemies,โ€ and a threat to civil rights advocacy. โ€œAdvocacy is still protected speech,โ€ she said.

This bill has been flying under the radar, with not much media reporting on it.

Constitutional experts call it terrifying. What happens here will spread to other states.

We have to turn up the volume. Send an email and tell your fellow Floridians.

Florida Lawmakers: Stop Political Repression โ€“ Vote NO on SB 1632/HB 1471 Please take action!

๐Ÿšจ Florida is fast-tracking a bill that would allow a handful of state officials to label a group a โ€œdomestic terrorist organizationโ€ without basic due process.

Itโ€™s on track to pass next week. Lawmakers need to hear from as many people as possible NOW ๐Ÿ‘‡

The filing of HB 945 comes at the same time legislation, SB 1632, โ€œIdeologies Inconsistent with American Principlesโ€ and sponsored by Vero Beach Republican Sen. Erin Grall, would allow the head of FDLE to designate groups as โ€œdomestic terrorist organizations.โ€ The bill would also mandate the expulsion of students aiding an organization once designated, as well as prohibit any state funding of any kind to support a designated organization or member of a designated organization, including private schools.

Under this bill, students who โ€œpromoteโ€ a designated terrorist organization would be immediately expelled.

The word โ€œpromoteโ€ isnโ€™t defined in the bill.

This is a clear attempt to silence student protests under the threat of expulsion.

Over $500 million to build a detention center in the middle of the Everglades in a matter of weeks.

Thereโ€™s plenty of money and infrastructure to make sure no one goes homeless. Thereโ€™s just no desire to do it.

The Liberal Case for Public Power When power is treated as a public good, it becomes cheaper, more reliable, and better positioned to meet the challenges of the future than privately held electrical utilities have ever demonstrated.

โ€œIf thereโ€™s one thing the story of PG&E and municipal options like SMUD, LADWP, and NPPD have consistently shown, itโ€™s that public ownership may be the best model of ownership for electricity and other natural monopolies.โ€

Florida governor could brand groups as terrorists, alarming free speech advocates Other bills would also ban certain books in schools and forbid referring to the โ€œWest Bankโ€ in official documents.

HB 1471 would allow the head of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement โ€” chosen by the governor โ€” to designate groups as foreign or domestic โ€œterrorist organizations.โ€

Companion bills would also make records about those decisions secret under state law.

Kansas Town Uses License Plate Readers to Go After Man Who Wrote Op-Ed | ACLU Targeting followed opinion piece critical of townโ€™s police and anonymously posted anti-ICE fliers

A Kansas man wrote an op-ed criticizing local police for cooperating with ICE. Instead of respecting his First Amendment rights, the police used automatic license plate readers to track him in hopes of finding wrongdoing.

We must keep getting this easily-abused surveillance out of our communities.
