Oh, and from Mars the sun is bluish from an opposite effect: the dust in the Martian atmosphere scatters red wavelengths. Meaning Martian sunsets are also distinctly blue. Our rovers have captured pictures of it.

01.03.2026 11:13 — 👍 4 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0In fact, it's the same thing that makes the sky blue -- Rayleigh scattering. The blue and violent wavelengths get scattered, leaving the yellows and reds to reach out eyes!

Did you know our sun isn't actually yellow? It releases light across the spectrum and is this pretty much pure white from space (peaking in the green actually!).
The only reason it appears yellow to us is because it's being filtered through Earth's atmosphere.

And in that spirit, I do thank him. Because he was one of the people who taught me to love stories, but also inadvertently helped me realize art does not justify cruelty.
You have to be a good artist and a good person both.
So, M. Simmons, thank you for the object lesson.
And, as is the way of things, there will always be a little bit of the Shrike, of Aenea, of parasitic resurrection, and metal trees with thorns in the things I write.
If nothing else, that is a testament to the way we are all ripples in the same pool. You can never know your impact on lives unseen.
My father introduced me to the Cantos, which adds to the complicated emotions.
Ironically, he did so by loving them but forbidding me from reading them until I was an adult. (They had "weird stuff" in them, which was my father's pale damnation of non-Christian conservative media)
So, Dan Simmons caught the last train out.
There are few book series that were as formative for Teenage!Tom as the Hyperion Cantos.
Simultaneously, Simmons was kind of a reactionary douchecanoe.
My emotions are complex at the moment. I hope he left more good in his wake than harm. Rest in peace.
I did not name her! I stole her from my ex-wife. That being said, I understood the reference the moment I heard the name, so... Yeah, nerd.

Like, AI is bad enough. You were already taking the laziest possible route. But you couldn't be fucking bothered to actually get it to put your name on the cover?
Fuck outta here.
A book cover showing a sailing ship, Cthulhu, whatever, the point is it's an AI generated book cover that still says AUTHOR NAME where the name should go.
I took this image off of the Kindle Store.
What the fuck is this.
I cut the title off because I don't want to dogpile anybody if this blew up for some weird reason.
But sincerely, this is embarrassing to the concept of being an author.
Is this the great democratization of art AI promised?
"Well first you'd have to know what C is, before you even get to the N. And I can tell you, two Ns? I wouldn't let myself get in that situation."
