Reptile Wisdom EP Song by Song: Zen in Motion. Here's our oddball guitar jam of the album. Musically, Mia has long admired the “lead drummer” model famously set forth by The Who (who of course also had a brilliant “lead bassist” in John Entwistle, who’s been her bass hero since she first picked up the four-string), and while that’s always been a force in the Lemon Knife formula, constructing the simple arpeggiated chords and then telling John to go ham on the drums behind them was a particularly pointed way to make use of that philosophy. The instrumental rehearsal-space scratch track reminded us so much of the band Ride that we named the file “ride.mp3.” Lyrically, this is just a nice simple ode to going out and making things happen, and finding inner peace through action rather than reflection. So why not go out to a Lemon Knife show or download our album :P

Reptile Wisdom EP Song by Song: Snakes! Snakes! Lyrically, we’ll avoid saying too much about this one since every time we've pushed back on the predatory ways certain music venues treat the musicians that enable them to exist, we've gotten in trouble. Suffice it to say--it's about that. Musically, with LK coming fresh from seeing the forever formidable Metallica, Mia crafted the main riffs taking heavy influence from the bass on the Load track “King Nothing,” which had been in her head for days. John had the idea to speed up the song after the first pre-chorus, a la the Queens of the Stone Age song “Everybody Knows That You’re Insane.” The result is chaos, in a pretty good way.

Reptile Wisdom EP Song by Song: Autothanatomobile. This one is quickly becoming one of our favorites with its hard-hitting attack. Lyrically, this is about American society's insane car obsession. I genuinely think in 50 years we'll look back and think it was ridiculous that we let barely-trained non-professionals drive cars that could kill people with a single second's lapse of judgment, and that we let them dominate so much of the landscape of our cities where there could be parks, housing, and businesses instead. The title is a little bit of a pretentious joke--thanatos is the Greek word for death, so it's about how our car-driving ways are literally killing ourselves through pollution, global warming, and crashes. Musically, trying something new in our songwriting process, the drumbeat came before the riffs. The goal was to make the riffs sound like the chugging machinery in a vehicle, especially on the verses--all coming together to be quite literally “driving.”

Reptile Wisdom EP Song by Song: The Tortoise. It's a time-honored tradition for bands to write songs about being a band, and I think this may be our first one. It feels like we're in an unusual place as a band, where having been around for 8 years most bands have either become famous or broken up, and we've done neither. So Lemon Knife is the tortoise, outlasting everything around it (and hopefully the famous part comes soon!).

Reptile Wisdom EP Song by Song: Komodo Dragon. Lyrically, this is the only reptile song on the EP that is indeed solely about a reptile. You can maybe tell we've been listening to a lot of King Gizzard based on repeating the name of a reptile, but another reference thrown into the lyrics is the Bob and Ray "Komodo Dragon" sketch from the '50s (the Komodo Dragon is the world's largest living lizard). Musically, the main riff comes straight from the Hetfield School of Phrygian Downstrokes, but the love letter to Gizzard continues, too--the inclination to shoehorn in a weirdly syncopated bridge came from a renewed love of the Petrodragonic Apocalypse album, and the suddenly semi-ghostly chorus, we realized later, was put together with subconscious recall of verses for a certain Mad Dog (OH, NO!).
