Yeah, in my accidental VAT expert days I had accountants emailing me for information. I'd just read the guidance about a change in the rules and joined the dots that no one else had.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in the world who actually reads the docs, or the thing I'm signing up to. This has only ever caused me trouble, like the time I accidentally became known as a European VAT expert. Took me years to stop getting VAT questions in my email.

The Invisible Work The coordination work that holds projects together disappears the moment it works. On the unfairness of recognition and finding leaders who see it anyway.

We all know that person, who does the invisible work, who quietly coordinates and holds projects together. They sadly rarely get credit for it though. It’s hard to measure, and often overlooked. We need to find leaders who can see and reward this invisible work.

Earlier I wondered why my trackpad wasn't working. Turned out I was trying to use my phone screen to control my computer.

ConFoo is ... or at least used to be ... in a hotel with an outdoor swimming pool on the roof. It's the only time my hair has frozen during a swim.

We were running away from it...

It was a fun race really, well organised. You had to park at the finish, then there were coaches busing people to the start line, which I thought would be chaos with over 2000 people, but was seamless.

Also, a finish surrounded by people who were just out to find bargains in the shops. That last bit through the outlet centre was unexpected!

Did the X-border 10k today. This sounds more exciting than the reality, which is a race from an industrial park 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 near Carlisle to a shopping outlet in Gretna 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 alongside the M6.

A windy and wet run along Hadrian's Wall. On days like this you really get a sense of this being wild border country. While warmly wrapped up in technical running gear, that is!

I was thinking, when everyone was posting their 2016 posts, that I was deep in the grid trenches at that point. I miss those days.

At one point Facebook seemed convinced that I drove a truck. I have never driven a truck, and road users should be glad about this.

My endless going down of strange rabbit holes does create some amusing ad targeting in my social media accounts. That said, I'm very puzzled as to why I'm being encouraged to attend "the UK’s only dedicated exhibition for the concrete community".

Looking for suggestions for WordPress hosting. My blog is currently on WP Engine, because I have done my time as a server admin, and don't need to run servers in 2026. However, it's really expensive, and gets more expensive the more of you look at a post. UK/EU-based preferably.

Yeah, they are often out here. I was so worried we were about to see a sheep get killed and potentially a nasty road accident, as there were fast cars on both sides of the road, and it's a bit of a hidden dip. Happy they got safely away!

The Facebook posting worked better than the police. The farmer came within minutes and we were able to point him in the direction the sheep had run off.

Eventful run today. Encountered a flock of sheep on a 60mph road. One friend was posting to Facebook (to find the farmer), another calling the police, and I was flagging down very fast traffic. Ultimately we got enough cars to stop, in a way that encouraged the sheep to run back through the fence.

Oh no. I have to go see a man about getting a leftover bit of root dug out of my gum next week.
