I did read the combined Savage/Defoe volume which ends both those runs, and I think I’m happy with how they’ve concluded. Will have to see what the end of Slaine and ABC Warriors is like

Among a certain sect of DC fans – often female, queer, and active on online fandoms from Tumblr and the like – Young Justice is basically the DC ur-text. I say that with such authority because it was my own experience, and Young Justice was one of the first DC series I read in full as a sixteen-year-old in 2011, nearly ten years after the series ended. I discovered comics for the first time with the help of Tumblr masterposts and Wikipedia deep dives, and fell into a deep, abiding obsession with DC in particular. Despite that obsession, it was not easy learning how to “read” DC history. It was not natural, and the knowledge was not ingrained, other than perhaps the basic secret identities and Justice League characters. To the me of 2011, Doiby Dickles existed, contextless, in the vacuum of YJ. How would I know otherwise?

The war ends, with the Volgans fleeing in defeat.

This is the end of the Volgan story cycle for the ABC Warriors - next will be the “return to” cycle of stories. But that’s for next time!

Onto the shelf this goes!

Ro-Jaws rolls up to the front line of the Volgan army and tells them that he banged their mothers

With Ro-Jaws on the team, armed with devastating insults about their mums, the Volgans don’t stand a chance

Ro-Jaws makes his glorious return, exiting a toilet

Ro-Jaws gives an interview to the press. The interviewer asks him what he’s all about, what his motto is, his creed. Ro-Jaws thinks about it and eventually replies “BOG OFF!”

With Zippo replacing Blackblood, the ABC Warriors make contact with the anonymous source who has been tipping them off and aiding their fight against the Volgans.

Turns out it’s Ro-Jaws! The heart and soul of everything 2000 AD. He joins the team

Blackblood abandons the ABC Warriors, happily murdering some women and children on the way

Zippo is saved. But Blackblood, the robot with betrayal hard wired into his operating system… betrays the team. He reveals he’s been working with the Volgans and he joins their side. Not a huge shock, mate

The ABC Warriors charge at their enemies and sing “let freedom reign”

Having established that every Warrior has a connection to Zippo in their past, we return to the present, where they’ve all teamed up again to save him from current-day destruction at the hand of the Volgan Empire

Steelhorn is surprised that humans are running in fear from him, unaware he was mindwiped and used to commit war crimes

Zippo intervenes and uses liquid napalm to take out Steelhorn

As we return to the story, we start with a flashback to Steelhorn’s past, revealing a time when the patriot was kind controlled into committing a bunch of war crimes. He was stopped by Zippo, the new character who has a retconned-in connection to every member of the ABC Warriors

Any volume of Essential Judge Dredd, which can be read in any order. I’d recommend The Apocalypse War as a good first one of that run. If you want the original black and white, try Case Files Volume 5. To start with something modern, try Judge Dredd: A Better World. Do not start with IDW!
