people who say “why do we need [fine arts, humanities degrees, mid-budget films] when they don’t make a ton of money?” are insufferable. why do we need chrysanthemums? why do we need bonfires or baleen whales or the color blue? we just do. we just do.

the cult of maximum efficiency is one of the worst things to happen to society. I can’t defend studying Latin or reading for pleasure or spending an hour at the park with my niece in a way that will satisfy shareholders. but they’re worth doing because they’re beautiful and good.

Casablanca is my favorite—no surprise there—but I'd like to mention another: Paris Blues. I love Paul Newman. He stars in this one alongside his wife, Joanne Woodward, and their on-screen chemistry is so touching. Plus Louis Armstrong guest stars! The music is great. & Sidney Poitier is so handsome!

Re: healthcare. When I was underemployed and living around the poverty line income-wise, I paid $16/month for health insurance. $0 copays. No cost medication. Primary care, specialists, procedures/surgeries were paid in full by the plan. Never had a coverage issue. Enrolled the day after I moved.

Minnesota is where I went. Solid state healthcare, good social programs, thriving queer community in the metro, healthy economy, trans protections, tons of natural water resources, lower cost of living than the West Coast by a significant amount and less wildfires.

Avoid scrolling during droughts of inspiration or moments of low motivation. Social media will drain your dopamine—and we need dopamine to feel motivated!

Instead, try:
- walking in nature
- exercise or yoga
- automatic drawing/writing
- sitting in the sun
