Imagined writing of Chinese signs can be decoded using Utah Arrays. Neural activity is found to transition through states linked to handwriting phases. Neurons’ tuning stays stable within states, but gain and direction shift as the brain progresses. Modeling these states improved decoding by 69%.

Hopefully people interested in studying the distinct cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying different forms of confidence can learn from our efforts. Publishing in NBDT @scholasticahq.bsky.social was a pleasure.

We found that while rats did integrate perceptual information with costs they were not optimal. Follow up analyses showed that individual differences in perceptual noise and risk-tolerance make it challenging to find regimes where optimal integration leads to significant gains in reward.

When the consequences of a decision are asymmetric perceptual confidence can be low while decision confidence is high. Bayesian Decision Theory tells us how to optimally combine perceptual uncertainty with action dependent costs.

if you are lying in bed at night and think you might smell something burning you might be uncertain of the smell but sure that you should get up to check the stove. We set out to disentangle these different kinds of confidence.
