Some forest restoration linked to short-term rise in zoonotic diseases Deforestation and land use change can accelerate the spread of zoonotic diseases — infectious illnesses that can spread from animals to humans — including malaria and COVID-19. While habitat…

Deforestation can accelerate zoonotic disease risk, but new research finds restoration may briefly raise risk in some areas.

Outcomes are highly context-dependent: rodent surges can increase disease in reforested sites, while wetland restoration often reduces transmission.

Brazil's GE eucalyptus boom shows how land-based geoengineering—marketed as climate mitigation—reproduces colonial, ecological, and social harms - Geoengineering Monitor By Natalie McClure, Isaac Millians and Amy Guzman.

Unmistakable rise in forest fires, getting bigger, longer, more destructive: 4 of the 5 worst years on record occurred since 2020.
Boreal & temperate conifer forests now particularly vulnerable.
Forests should be carbon sinks but in 2023 & 2024 they only absorbed ¼ of the CO2 they typically do.
