Yeah the sound itself is cool, but the quirks are inspiring all kinds of ideas for musical possibilities

There’s a weird delay happening between the left and right channel, and it’s awesome as an effect! you can make feedback loops that makes weird psychedelic soundscapes. It’s also a really cool bass overdrive.

So there won’t be a full track, but I’ll definitely be using it more as an effect.

I was hoping to be able to produce a track exclusively with this Akai tape machine. I don’t know if it’s the design or that it’s old and malfunctioning, but the Sound on Sound function is basically unusable for its intended function. BUT —

Stereo drum overhead mics ➡️ Sony Cassette (because it has a cool onboard compressor) ➡️ Akai reel to reel

It does the analog tape thing as you’d expect but when you drive it really hard, the akai spazzes out and only lets in super short bit-crushed transients.

Thanks, me too. But day 1 of the Time Machine has been pretty fun so far!

The first step is seeing what I can do with what I already have on hand. This morning was centered around exploring the “Sound on Sound” feature on this Akai reel to reel.

I don’t know how viable of a path this will end up being, but further tests are needed. So… stay tuned I guess? I don’t know.
