To be fair, I saw the "Bah" post first on my feed, then when I saw the "Cero" post later on my brain began piecing the pieces together.

we're back in the past, had two wip projects pop up in my head that make me think i'm back in 2013's internet.

This reply has upset me.

Overall, no one is gonna read my thoughts, but I think this is just another reason why we're all just a rat stuck in a cage, despite all our rage.

It's like a comment I saw said; this pilot feels like an 11 minute trailer to a 1 hour pilot.

This is NOT a good comment, this is the exact opposite reaction you want when producing something that you want people to be invested in.

This is what the writing team lacked, I feel, that introspection to know that things need to be drawn out and introduced one at a time to a viewer, or else things will get lost and no one will understand what it is you want to make.

The time that went into Dad Strife could have been put towards making this Pilot, you know, a Pilot.

Look at the recent Knights of Guinevere for instance; It uses drawn out scenes to establish a world and characters to an audience that knows nothing about it, and assumes you know nothing.

Now the biggest part of this; the over the top "made to show off" Dad Strife sequence. WHY is it being animated like this? This shows NOTHING and only reinforces in the normal viewer that John doesn't like his dad, and he doesn't like John. Which is FAR from the truth.

There were a few visual gags, one that I mentioned before was that Pesterchum was directly shown, but never once was there a HINT of it being used as a chatting platform. It was alluded to that they were never going to use it, as seen on Rose's computer screen with it glitching out.

Honestly, you can skip so much of this by just realising that the writers got so much wrong but pushed for it to be animated and finished up regardless.

At least Rose and Jade's lines are IN CHARACTER, which seems to be the biggest challenge for this team.

Do NOT treat it like a game and break the forth wall if you're going to establish that they aren't already in a game. Yes, they have a Sylladex, but don't have them directly acknowledge it as a "gotcha" fourth wall break. It's too messy to work, and no one on the board stuck the landing.

Now doing all of the small nods to what happens in the early parts of this Act all through the sequence is a nice touch, but comes off as messy because it's a blink and you'll miss it moment. It's also treated like a game, despite the fact that they aren't IN the game yet.

Dave swearing? That's fine, his whole thing at this point in the story is that he's a freer spirit than the other three kids. The only thing he really cares about is impressing his big bro. However, John Eggbert? No. He would maybe say frick, but it's not in his vocab this early to swear.

Like I said before; Flip-phones were a weird choice, considering you show the Pesterchum logs MULTIPLE times. It would have been easier for animators to just inject text on the screen, and have the voice actors read what's being said. That would give you time to look around the room to establish.

But I'm jumping ahead, let me go back a bit;

Say Zoosmell Poopfart once, don't repeat it and do a "THIS IS YOU NOW HEHEHE," that wasn't the original script and attempting to add this was pointless and added no comedy. Enforce John Eggbert's name, firmly, set his character's tone into stone.

While watching the pilot, I kept going back to the webcomic as is now maintained, in order to see what the pilot was attempting to adapt; normal viewers are not doing this.

The script and story were so off key that I found myself flabbergasted by the entire thing. Why is Dad Strife a big sequence?

There's also the subject of "Vivzie-fication," wherein characters who normally don't swear or wouldn't have, now swear way more than they should. And Viviziepop isn't even a direct cause this time! It's the writers!

I think where the writers went wrong is attempting to modernize it; using flip phones instead of text logs, having a narrator sloppily explain important sub points, and breaking the fourth wall for the sake of comedy. It looks good in the moment, but it doesn't look good folded out.

But the more I think about the writing/pacing of the pilot, the more I wonder if this is the right team for such an ambitious project. I get it, a pilot is meant to set the scene and tell a summary; but it doesn't even do that? 2am in the pm does it far better, and that has zero relation to its evo.

the more i think about the Homestuck pilot, the more I'm deeply upset with the writers on the team less so anyone else.

The animation is fun and fluid, the voice actors match the personality and energy of their characters, and the music is very nice (as Homestuck's music normally is.)

like i get what they were going for, and the more you think about the world its set in the more horrifying it becomes, but with what you're PRESENTING, rather than showing and not telling, doesn't exactly fit psychological thriller.

after thinking on it;

i LOVE knights of guinevere, i think it's possibly one of the best pilots to come out in this pilot season.

HOWEVER

calling it a "Psychological Thriller" is like saying something like Fall Guys is a psychological thriller. there's action and suspense, but no horror.
