what inspires me in these moments when it feels like so much is going wrong, is the realization that true power isn’t about prestige or wealth. It’s about courage. And ANYONE can be courageous.

It's often the people without significant resources that lead the way in pro-democracy movements…

It’s hard not to be dispirited by the capitulation of so many elite institutions. When renowned universities and prestigious law firms bow to pressure from this authoritarian movement that is a signal to so many others that it is OK to capitulate too, or even worse, obey in advance.

My Democratic colleagues and I just left the state of Texas to break quorum and stop Trump’s redistricting power grab.

Trump is trying to rig the midterm elections right before our eyes. But first he’ll have to come through us.

It’s time to fight back.

ICE crackdown imperils Afghans who aided U.S. war effort, lawyers say Advocates fear President Donald Trump’s ambitious deportation plan jeopardizes Afghan interpreters and other allies who worked for U.S. troops during the war.

A disgrace.

When public media disappears, so do the stories that bring us together.

With federal funding eliminated, millions may lose their last trusted source of news and connection.

And if it can't inspire them to do the right thing, then it can shame them to do the right thing.

This isn't a post about how elite institutions don't matter. They do matter. They matter a lot. And when they capitulate, that is a serious problem for our democracy and country.

…that model integrity, that inspire their fellow citizens to follow. While the capitulation of elite institutions can be a signal to others in society to give up, it can go the other way too. The courage of ordinary citizens can be a model for elite institutions to do the right thing.

First, even among elite institutions, there are many that are standing strong. Just think of the Los Angeles Dodgers or Perkins Coie or Princeton University to name a few.
But even more importantly …

How can our democracy survive if so many powerful people normalize giving up?

I have often returned to this question over the past six months when we have seen waves of capitulations, like we’re seeing now. The thing that grounds me in these moments and gives me hope are a couple things.

But it’s important to remember just how much power THE PEOPLE have in this country.

Each one of us has so much power in this moment. Because ultimately, courage is power. And every single one of us can be courageous.

On a really deep, fundamental level, I just know that I will never give up against these clowns. I don’t care how bad it gets. I am constitutionally incapable of it. It is so far beneath me and all of us.
