sometimes hits you just how alone so many people must feel, doesn't it.

Everything else follows from there. If you do not believe in human dignity, you end up with their disgusting immigration policies and rhetoric that make British citizens second class and repulse decent minded voters.

Throwing trans people under the bus is the most telling policy of the Starmer government. Their instincts are bad and they should be completely replaced with people who believe in human dignity.

"why aren't young people having kids"

oh sure, love, I'll just stack one under the sink, shall I? it can live off the soap flakes.

nothing like finding an old Barratt TV ad from 1976 advertising a new-build rowhouse for a mortgage of £14.00 a week.

that's £60.67 per month.

adjusted for inflation in 2026, it's a house. for a £412pcm mortgage. a house.

A HOUSE.

A BLOODY HOUSE.

I rent a miserable shoebox flat and pay double.

It applies only to more than two or something. I'm not sure the exact rules.

Yesterday I scored my first competitive goal for my football club, won a trophy, and was presented with a winners medal at the Nottingham Forest ground

Turns out trans people are alright at this football thing, who knew?

Moving Home with an Electric Van How my daughter and her boyfrind arrived in their new home

I've just written a review of the 100% electric Citroen e-Dispatch. It might be moving in more ways than one.

Yup! It's to protect "family dwellings" but in practice it (further) limits housing supply.

if you read one post further up, you'll read that chick-shredding is something I definitively want to get rid of. hell, if we can make animal products without animals, that's the ideal.

I am of the opinion that killing children with bombs is bad, sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm very sorry for that opinion. My morality is a little fucked that way.

I get the idea of cultured "udders" producing milk without any need for an actual cow conjures up unpleasant images, but if that's what you're worried about, then I assure you the present day meat and dairy industries have an entire buffet of horrors that are far, far worse.

And I'm not even vegan.

and when it comes to the animal industry, I'm generally OK with innovations - "unnatural" as they may be - that do away with things like gas chambers for baby goats (because the billies are worthless in the milk industry) and chick shredders (because roosters don't lay eggs)

01.03.2026 08:43 — 👍 14    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

this is not aimed at anyone specific, but I'm really not here for the "it's unnatural!" argument against engineered milk and other animal substitutes, or practices like genetically engineered chickens that produce 99% female eggs.

the modern food industry is an *industry* - cute farm images are PR.

a fun game to play with Dutch-language dubs of things is "spot where they subbed in a singer from Belgium because they don't do the gutteral 'G' sound"

A large chunk of the housing crisis in NL is due to lack of new construction, yes. Another chunk is more people living alone. Under these circumstances, legalizing (and regulating) house-sharing makes sense.

01.03.2026 07:53 — 👍 7    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

At the moment, "family homes" are require a permit to have more than two adults living in them (exception for adult children).

Does this *stop* house sharing? Nope! It means it's in an unregulated grey area where you pay €1200pm for a room for three month periods with no contract and no protection.

01.03.2026 07:52 — 👍 8    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

actually breaking with my progressive buddies on this one and saying that allowing house shares in Amsterdam is a good idea, actually

a 406mm rim running on a suspension block immediately lowers the torque you need to turn the wheel to 65% of what it was before. as in, that's 40Nm vs 60Nm with correspondingly lower loads on everything. it even gives you a lower center of gravity! amazing, I know!

01.03.2026 07:38 — 👍 5    🔁 1    💬 0    📌 0

"why does our cargo bike keep stalling"

hmm well. maybe the whole part where you're trying to turn a 622mm rim with a 60mm tyre on it with a motor itself geared far too high. maybe it's that.

I'm walking around heavy with the depression and anxiety these times create, but I refuse to talk needlessly because it *feels* like action. I leave that open space for the people with significant things to say.

Instead just doing my best brighten things up here and there when I can.

After a long day coppicing with a bunch of amazing volunteers I popped down to see how this little pond is filling up after 24 hours of leaky dam and blocked up land drain. Huge change since yesterday! The whole area is covered in an inch or two of water, and loads more water up the valley floor.
