I’d prefer one meeting a day. Having one meeting freshens up my mind and gets me thinking, which also helps with writing. Many meetings a day drag me down and exhaust me, which is also worse for the other person in the meeting as they won’t be able to get the best out of me

It is the scourge of our times and as a foreigner in the UK it does not feel any better. It is clear that the spirit of open borders and free movement is coming to an end but Germany is still as strong part of the EU. And at least in Germany there is clear and vocal opposition to the far right

Now in my independent lab we are working on a range of different phosphoinositide conversions. From PI(5)P to PI(4,5P2 conversion during peroxisome membrane contact site formation to the PI(3)P to PI conversion by the Myotubularins during receptor trafficking.

By segmenting the beads we can quantify these differences and show that active Arf6 strongly enhances the reaction speed of phosphoinositide conversion by the PIP5K. This has drastic effect on membrane trafficking pathways! www.cell.com/current-biol...

Importantly it also allows us to directly compare beads with different surface functionalisation. Here I attached the constitutively active mutant of the small GTPase Arf6 (Arf6-QL) and the inactive mutant to beads and we see complete separate reaction kinetics!

These realtime kinetics allow us to monitor individual reactions and revealed strong stochastic effects due to complex feedback loops as has been shown by Scott Hansen and Jay Groves www.pnas.org/doi/full/10....
