This is still my advice: Become a writer anyway. Fuck it, do it, it won't save you, but it's still a beautiful dream to write novels and short stories and poems and mingle with other dreamers and make art and laugh in the face of death. And writing is constant death. Live más.

It is not beside the point false statements were made in an ethics report. It would have been more than sufficient to say credit was offered and not received to establish a pattern. That was not the case and I won’t be gaslit into thinking this is a minor issue with the report. Please amend.

However, and I’ll end on this, at the time I was a student and very active on social media/checking my email constantly for submissions, etc. I had no weight in the industry, and Ekpeki didn’t either. If such an offer was made, a simple email exchange could have corrected this.

There is a need to set the record straight because, based on three instances in the original report, people have made fake assumptions of unpaid editorial labor and concealment of involvement that doesn’t match up.

I have been shown no evidence a promise of acknowledgment was made either way.

In March 2019, Dominion didn’t exist and I didn’t know who Ekpeki was. The edits she did could not have been for it.

The call for submissions is outside the original edit/critique, and future one.

In February 2020, Dominion was clearly co-edited by him and Ife-Iyoku listed.

February 2020: She returns further notes on his story, when it’s clear it’s in Dominion and he’s a co-editor.

Finally, “He hadn’t been transparent with me about his involvement with Anthology D when it was being put together, even while I was editing for it.”

August 2019: I enjoy the story and think having an African story anchoring the book/editor would be great. I extend an offer to partner.

August - December 2019: An open call is launched that is archived for review

January - March 2020: A Kickstarter is launched that is heavily promoted

Further more, she couldn’t have edited the story during that time frame based on what she forwarded to me. The timeframe is:

March 2019: She does critique notes and minor edits

July 2019: I began work on Dominion solo

August 2019: Ekpeki submits to my defunct magazine Selene Quarterly (count.)

The original edits took place in March 2019. The open call ran from August 26, 2019, through December 31, 2019. If Erin was forwarded the call, as archived, there was no singling out of white South African anywhere: horrortree.com/event/taking...

In February 2020, Erin showed Ekpeki contacted her for further critique notes which she returned that month. A Kickstarter was being heavily promoted with his story listed and showing he was a co-editor. It would not have been possible to miss this.

“But I was on the radar, editing a story for Anthology D. I did not submit to the call (though I had been sent the submissions link by a friend, and did not know I was at that time editing a story in said anthology) because the submissions guidelines said “white South Africans need not apply…”

She forwarded me critique notes and minor edits done in March 2019. As stated in contemporaneous interviews, I started conceptualizing Dominion in July of that year, and did not e-meet Ekpeki until he submitted to Selene. These edits were not done in connection with Dominion given that timeframe.

“But this gradually shifted into me editing stories, which at the time I did not know was for his co-edited anthology: Anthology D. When he told me a story I’d worked on was going to be in the anthology, I questioned him about what I’d been doing.”

The stories are now his story, Ife-Iyoku.

Erin told me she would amend her report as well. I’m including the full statement because I think it’s important to not brush aside what was claimed, and subsequently amplified.
