Opioid Settlement Windfalls Must Fund the Cure The recent $7.4 billion opioid settlement signed onto by all 50 States and U.S. territories with Purdue Pharma marks another milestone in the national effort to combat the opioid epidemic.

I’ll assume a sub-editor chose this headline, but the opioid settlements are NOT WINDFALLS! They are the return of wealth wrongfully taken from communities, and paid in cash and human suffering.

In the end, we're all "self-taught".

The absurdity of the idea that private sector jobs are “real jobs” and public sector jobs are just "dead weight" is easily demonstrated by the fact that organisations, and even entire sectors, and can be swapped between public and private ownership with the stroke of a legislative pen.

If I could offer one piece of advice to science writers (as a science reader) it would be work out whether your book/article/piece is for a general audience or an academic audience and DO NOT try and straddle that divide.

It’s easier to assume that anyone advocating for vaccines is simply bought by Big Pharma, rather than face the more complex reality: pharmaceutical companies can behave badly at times, and still sometimes align with genuine public health goals.

Would be real good right now if just one of these 900 American billionaires could cover the mRNA research that RFK Jr just killed, at least until we limp through to an election and the people can decide if they want to retain the anti-science party.

Glad to live in a country where, if the leader ‘fired’ the chief statistician because they didn’t like the data, these things would happen in this order:

1. The Courts would clarify that the govt doesn’t have the power to unilaterally remove said official and hence they are still in post,

Good advice for young male victims of the loneliness epidemic!

In my life, for better or worse, I’ve watched a lot of sports games.

One thing I’ve learnt is that in maybe 20% of games in any code, the team that seems to be cruising to victory at the end of the first quarter ultimately loses.

Sure hope that’s the game I’m watching in America right now.

Scientists advocating or proposing hypotheses often say things like “I believe” this, and they probably shouldn’t. It confuses the critics of science who say it’s just another type of “faith”.
