any random image from the campaign shows Mamdani smiling, Cuomo looking like a 19-year-old intern hasn't answered his text messages, and Sliwa maniacally grinning as the feline hivemind that operates him sees a bug.

It's a lot more true for youth and/or those who cannot afford the costs associated with the spaces that exist... but exist they do, in great number. Religious third spaces also obviously exist and are a special case.

You might say, "That's showbiz, baby!" And you'd be right. But the kinds of people who are successful enough to go into politics are also typically the kinds of people who have reached a station in life where others show them respect and deference by default, so they react even worse to lectures.

...being subjected to countless meetings with, yes, The Groups, but also individual and groups of donors at which they are condescendingly lectures to by people convinced that their views at that exact moment are obvious, scientifically correct and only a complete ignoramus could think otherwise.

It's true that Dem politicians have no ability to force message discipline on randos on the Internet, nor should they. If they want to avoid being defined by those randos, they have to be genuine and specific about what they believe. Many would prefer not to, because inevitably that results in...

For that matter, gondolas are used extensively as municipal public transport in Medellín (which is where Joe Sternleib got the idea for the Georgetown one from, IIRC) and other cities, not just ski resort towns or weird one-offs like the London cable car or the Roosevelt Island tram

Imagining fierce debates within the Presidium over the merits of centralized vs. delegated margarine governance. Or even individual responsibility and accountability, which we could call маргариндивидуализм

Following Bipartisan Push from Reps. Cleaver & Davids, Congress Passes $625 Million for World Cup Security (Kansas City, MO) – Following a months-long bipartisan push to secure federal funding to strengthen security services at host cities during the 2026 World Cup, U.S. Representatives Emanuel Cleaver, II...

A lot of that is a Congressional plus up, but FEMA runs pretty much all the homeland security grants cleaver.house.gov/media-center...

Pretty much all DHS grants, including security for NSSEs, go through FEMA because they have the professionalized grants management capability

If I told thousands of people that the head of an agency was being read the riot act by a judge and that was not the case, I would be fired before the day was out. Maybe they wouldn't be assholes about it, because the deterrent to not get it wrong is the firing. Maybe the heat is the deterrent here

I have nothing personally against Ms. Kabas, but I am fucking sick and tired of Bsky journalists - hailed as bold, progressive truth-tellers or whatever - failing to meet basic standards of fact-checking and having it normalized because they're 'holding Trump accountable' & 'speaking truth to power'

The incorrect substance being communicated was that Bovino is the leader of CBP when he is not. That's a substantive difference, unlike for example all the people who mistakenly call it "Customs and Border Patrol," which is just getting a name wrong. The leader of CBP is not being grilled by a judge

Not only is Greg Bovino not "the Chief of US Customs and Border Protection" - that's not a real title, and the Commissioner of CBP is Rodney Scott - but he's not even the Chief of the Border Patrol, which is Michael Banks. At latest count, 4.7K likes and 1.6K reposts. Journamalism!

I suppose they could just start doing raids on every Home Depot parking lot, construction site, meatpacking plant, farm, restaurant kitchen, etc. etc. Just cast the widest possible net. With the TPS revocations, odds of catching at least one undocumented person also increase.

We had a system along those lines... for communicating the defense call from the sidelines in HS football. It started with two numbers, which was the base formation (e.g., 34, 52, or 42 - we didn't really ever run a 4-3) and then each defensive play had its own hand gesture (34 Whip, 42 Bear, etc.)

See now I'm wondering how I would've tried to pull this off. Maybe a cartoon called Sasha & the Bears, with the Sasha being a pint-sized Bortnikov who is the ringmaster of Fancy Bear, Dancing Bear, etc. They can sing a parody song, with 'Crocodile Gera' (Gerasimov) on accordion + Shoigurashka vocals

You're correct, obviously, but the average person does not have a mental model of what government policy is & how it interacts with state capacity as a separate but related thing. It's the same as the "President has GOOD ECONOMY button on his desk" thing. Surely there's a "FIX THE BORDER" button too

At a Sheetz off of I-81 in Harrisonburg, a guy who looked and sounded like Rob Zombie (leather, chains, came, deep raspy voice) approached me as I was standing at the booze cooler and asked "Excuse me, have you had the Bahama Mama? They're extremely delicious" and proceeded to take two.

I've read parts of it, but I'm definitely not qualified to weigh in on how seriously it engaged with the literature regardless, since it's not my field, and I don't know the corpus. What I do know is that the OP made a sloppy claim based on a book review, and academics Should Not Do That.
