THE PHANTOM MENACE (1999) is not Midnight Movie #8 but it is a prequel set many years before its first iteration. It also drops you into a wildly dense universe of factions and freaks….

NOTHING BUT TROUBLE (1991) is not Midnight Movie #7 but it’s the most abject and hilarious exercise in poor taste since PINK FLAMINGOS- wait maybe I should have used that film….

GOD TOLD ME TOO (1976) is not Midnight Movie #6 but it’s as profane and comes from the co-creator of one of the most notorious exploitation films in recent memory.

DELICATESSEN (1991) is not Midnight Movie #5 but it’s similarly darkly whimsical. And an overdue feature debut.

HOT FUZZ (2007) is not Midnight Movie #4 but this director does conduct bloody bedlam in a small town.

MY FATHER IS A HERO (1995) is not Midnight Movie # 3 but it kicks as much ass.

POSSESSION (1981) is not Midnight Movie #2 but both feature relationships that will chill you to the bone.

ISHTAR (1987) is not Midnight Movie #1 it is sneaking around is dangerous business.

On the far-flung planet of Sirius 6B circa 2078, a misfit squad of soldiers attempts to negotiate a ceasefire in a forever war that’s been perpetuated in part by the use of artificially intelligent, self-replicating weapons known as screamers. Nicknamed for the shrieking whirring of their blades and designed to hunt and kill any and all lifeforms, these machines have begun to evolve in both appearance and directives, and SNAFU ensues. If any of this sounds familiar, it’s a credit to the wide-reaching influence of Philip K. Dick’s short story “Second Variety”, which inspired a pantheon of iconic kill-bots from The Terminator to Battlestar Galactica’s Cylons (particularly the 2000s reboot) and serves as the source material for this sturdy CanCon cut of pulp sci-fi thrills. Shot in Quebec by genre stalwart Christian Duguay (heir to David Cronenberg’s Scanners), who was working from an adaptation inaugurated by Dan O’Bannon (Alien, Total Recall) though eventually re-written by Miguel Tejada-Flores (the progenitor of Revenge of the Nerds), Screamers makes an entertaining vehicle for sparkly pyrotechnics and stop-motion–infused scares. Further featuring interstellar politics and a smouldering Peter Weller (Robocop), no one will mistake it as an apogee of the genre, but it’s a nostalgic reminder of an era when fun schlock was well-produced and widely projected in theatres. Just ignore the rudimentary CGI, and focus on Deak Ferrand’s purdy matte paintings. PETER KUPLOWSKY

The standing ovation for NIRVANNA THE BAND THE SHOW THE MOVIE is going to become a core SXSW memory. Helluva screening. Can't wait for more people to see this movie. It's so good it should be illegal.
