Spending WAY too much time working around versioning issues in open source packages today. First JSONPath, now the Python requests library.

A new dependency warning is breaking my CI processes.

See how JSONPath is implemented across different languages. See the FAQ for why we are doing this and where the results come from.

Don't know if I would have settled on JSONPath as a query language had I known what a mess its implementations were, when it comes to implementing a standard behavior.

I made it over the hump with a modern and legacy package, so I guess I'm set now? *shrug*

Claude’s Cycles

Don Knuth, Stanford Computer Science Department

(28 February 2026; revised 02 March 2026)

Shock! Shock! I learned yesterday that an open problem I’d been working on for several weeks had just been solved by Claude Opus 4.6 β€” Anthropic’s hybrid reasoning model that had been released three weeks earlier! It seems that I’ll have to revise my opinions about β€œgenerative AI” one of these days. What a joy it is to learn not only that my conjecture has a nice solution but also to celebrate this dramatic advance in automatic deduction and creative problem solving. I’ll try to tell the story briefly in this note.

By this logic, the US has been at war with Iran since 1953, when the CIA overthrew Mohammed Mossadegh to ensure that western oil companies, and not the Iranian people, controlled Iranian oil. It’s brutal puppet the Shah tortured & killed for 25 years. That’s why they chanted DEATH TO AMERICA in 1979

CircleCI test failing when the old library goes missing.

I aim for everything passing some basic CI tests, so that things like me swapping out one JSONPath library for a more expressive one can get caught if I miss updating a reference.

Lots of Dependabot updates to review.

Lots of Dependabot updates to review.

One of the reasons my e-mail has gotten out of hand is the sheer amount of *defense* I have to play as a software developer these days defending against things like supply side attacks.

Given that I try to structure my code as reusable modules, my weekly Dependabot homework review isn't trivial.

Feishin music player hooked up to a remote repository.

I've been making a lot of noise about Jellyfin serving as my persona Netflix, but its music capabilities, combined with a player like Feishin make it a damn good Spotify replacement as well.

Part of the US speedrun into becoming Russia under Trump means a lot more unnecessary casualties in our war of aggression. Including shooting our own aircraft down.

What were your favorite (sci-fi) animated shows when you were a child?

Even though it was set during the European conquest of the Americas, "The Mysterious Cities of Gold" is full-on anime science fiction, featuring a flying mechanical condor and lost technologies from places like Atlantis.

Reacquainting myself with Delerium after a decade-plus of not listening to them (due to reasons I won't elaborate on here).

Seems like the right time to revisit a known-good act.
