Five Ways to Teach Critical Thinking in Challenging Times Even when certain words or topics are prohibited by the state, educators can still cultivate students’ motivation and skills to recognize, analyze, and challenge injustice.

"These small practices strengthen students’ ability to build just relationships and communities outside of schoolβ€”and each models what connected human engagement can look and feel like."

Debates Over Math Teaching Are Heating Up. They Could Affect Classrooms A controversial new movement promoting the "science of math" has come into the math establishment's crosshairs.

As a language researcher, I’m always curious what's intended/achieved by placing β€œthe science of” in front of a subject area as a modifier. What are users attempting to signal with this phrase? How does it create in/out groups (and to proliferate spicy podcasts)?

The Delusion of Official English: A Policy Brief on Executive Order 14224, Designating English as the Official Language of The United States | The Delusion of Official English: A Policy Brief on Execu... Manifold @ Penn. An Intuitive, collaborative, open-source platform for scholarly publishing

English is NOT the official language of the U.S. just because an (illegitimate) executive order said it was. In this policy brief, Kara Viesca an I caution against granting last year's executive order a legitimacy it does not have. Don't comply in advance.

A more expansive approach to studying what works in education | Brookings James Soland urges a broader approach to education research, combining causal and qualitative studies to show what works.

"We need something more than a clearinghouse to help identify what works in education; we need a similar focus on understanding how and why something works."

Great piece by @uvaehd.bsky.social colleague Jim Soland!

The catch-22 of being told to: (1) Scrub your syllabi/program of DEI terminology so it doesn't get flagged, but also (2) Don't teach about content that wasn't advertised as part of the course. Then get fired either way.

Gone are the days of expecting the government to do its job to protect public health, so a small way we can enact the values of justice and love in our every day lives is to mask up if you're feeling sick.

It's how you say "I care about others" in a world devoid of compassion.

Promoted with Tenure! It’s definitely an inflection point, and I’m grateful to share this milestone with friends & colleagues who supported us though so much along the way. It’s a strange time to be in academia (to say the least), but here’s to keeping up the fight as ever, as always.
