Real leadership for women isn’t about suddenly claiming the mic when it suits you. It’s about who you stood alongside when it was hard, who you made room for when you had power, and whether you used your influence when it counted, and not just when you want to hoard power.

The weird men online have endless reservoirs of psychological dysfunction and large expanses of time to marshall their obsessions into people’s mentions. More often than not, they win. Several former politicians have admitted that being subjected to monotonous daily abuse was a factor in their public breakdowns. Former prime minister Jacinda Ardern has moved to the US and still requires security escorts when she re-enters the country.

Councillor Chung’s email represents a new low for local politics in this country. I have supported the Mayor through this type of nonsense since she was elected and will continue to do so. Please don’t vote for behaviour like this or anyone associated with it. It’s disgusting.

I could not be more stoked with the thirty percent increase in Wellington library users since we went fines free. Whatever else I get to do in local government, this will be a real highlight.
