๐ Berkeley Earthโs 2025 Global Temperature Report is out.
2025 was the 3rd warmest year on record. Annual global temperature reached 1.44 ยฑ 0.09ยฐC above the pre-industrial baseline; 770 million people experienced locally record-warm annual conditions.
Full report: berkeleyearth.org/global-tempe...
The global warming trend continued in 2025. Each of the past 11 years (2015โ2025) has been among the 11 warmest on record. Explore more data from #CopernicusClimate in the Global Climate Highlights 2025. #GCH2025

Climate change has already reshaped the bioclimatic space of extreme events in the Arctic ๐โ๏ธ Arctic biodiversity has entered a new era of bioclimatic extremes w/ more droughts, greater winter-warming ๐ & more rain-on-snow events ๐งโ๏ธ

7 (7)/ This is the largest assessment of herbivory impacts on Arctic soil fungi to date.
Full paper: doi.org/10.1002/ecog...
6 (7)/ As the Arctic warms and vegetation shifts, AM fungi may become more prevalentโpotentially changing carbon storage dynamics.
Ignoring AM fungi in Arctic studies risks missing a big piece of the puzzle.
5 (7)/ Soil properties (pH, SOM) and climate (growing season temperature) were stronger predictors of fungal composition than vegetation type.
Bottom-up factors > top-down herbivory for most fungi.
4 (7)/ Why does this matter?
AM fungi are near their ecological limits in the Arctic. Changes in herbivory or warming could amplify their response, altering plantโfungal interactions and nutrient cycling.
3 (7)/ What did we find?
- Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi were most sensitive to herbivore exclusion.
- Ectomycorrhizal (EcM) and ericoid (ErM) fungi showed no consistent response.
2 (7)/ We analyzed soils from 15 herbivore exclosure experiments across the Arctic, sequencing fungal DNA (ITS and SSU) to see how communities shift when large mammals are excluded.

1 (7)/ Why care about Arctic fungi๐?
They drive carbon and nutrient cycling in some of the planetโs most carbon-rich soils. Yet, their interactions with large herbivores (reindeer, caribou, etc.) remain poorly understood.

Take-home: EcM/ErM fungi accelerate N cycling more than expected. Plant dominance matters. Predicting tundra responses needs mycorrhizal type + community composition.
