In Old English, the passive voice could be formed in two ways:
A. 'hit is Δ‘ebrΕht'
= it is brought
B. 'hit wierΓΎ Δ‘ebrΕht'
= lit. it becomes brought,
with 'weorΓΎan' (to become)
Sister languages such as German still use B:
'es wird gebracht'
'WeorΓΎan' became 'to worth', but now it's all but gone:

18.01.2025 23:34 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The English words 'no' and 'no' don't have the same origin.
'No', the opposite of 'yes', comes from West-Germanic *naiw ("never").
'No' as in 'no pain, no gain' arose as a variant of 'none' and stems from *nain ("not any").
They only share the n-, from *ne ("not").

The German word 'Feuer' looks a bit like French 'feu' and both mean "fire".
A coincidence! They're not etymologically related at all.
'Feuer' and 'fire' come from West Germanic *fuir, while 'feu' stems from Latin 'focus' (hearth), borrowed into English as 'focus'.

'Cinder' and 'cendre' may look alike but they aren't etymologically related: they come from two unrelated words.
However, 'cendre' did influence the spelling of 'cinder'.
