In Old English, the passive voice could be formed in two ways:

A. 'hit is đebrōht'
= it is brought

B. 'hit wierþ đebrōht'
= lit. it becomes brought,
with 'weorΓΎan' (to become)

Sister languages such as German still use B:
'es wird gebracht'

'WeorΓΎan' became 'to worth', but now it's all but gone:

The word the mermaid's name comes from can be reconstructed to mean tranquility in Proto-Khaajokhiilo (presumably of substrate origin), which in CΓͺws shifted to mean 'beauty' :3

2/2 This has developed to the point where the CΓͺws people have come to view it as their duty to protect the rest of the bay peoples from the 'barbarian hordes', given their position at the mouth of the bay.

The CΓͺws word for barbarian is "GΓΈkkikel" (with the first component being supposedly imitative of barbarian languages), the people of CΓͺwkour fear and hate the southern barbarians to the point of paranoia due to frequent raids and repeated barbarian attempts to conquer their land 1/

The English words 'no' and 'no' don't have the same origin.

'No', the opposite of 'yes', comes from West-Germanic *naiw ("never").

'No' as in 'no pain, no gain' arose as a variant of 'none' and stems from *nain ("not any").

They only share the n-, from *ne ("not").

The German word 'Feuer' looks a bit like French 'feu' and both mean "fire".

A coincidence! They're not etymologically related at all.

'Feuer' and 'fire' come from West Germanic *fuir, while 'feu' stems from Latin 'focus' (hearth), borrowed into English as 'focus'.

After a cosy Christmas fire, there are cinders in the fireplace, as well as ashes, which in French are called cendres.

'Cinder' and 'cendre' may look alike but they aren't etymologically related: they come from two unrelated words.

However, 'cendre' did influence the spelling of 'cinder'.

Have ADHD and ever find yourself wracked with guilt and shame about how you have left all your friends on read for days, weeks, or months?

And when you do finally muster up the courage to speak, it feels pathetic?

Take heart.

The finnish verb for to be enough, riittÀÀ, originally meant β€˜to cover with thin ice’

if you ever feel youβ€˜re going overboard with metaphors in #conlang ing, there is nothing more ridiculous than what natlangs do
