Return of the Shark Week Special! 🦈🦷

For the 2nd year in a row, I have channeled my peak nerdiness as an artist + amateur fossil hunter in celebration of #SharkWeek. I’ve selected 5 fossilized shark teeth I found at the Chesapeake Bay to release as original drawings tomorrow (7/7) at 10am.

While two of the soldiers had existing portraits, history recorded vague descriptions, at best, for the remaining five. It was an honor to give faces to the faceless and have my work included in yet another gorgeously designed exhibit by Gallagher & Assoc.

Some shots of the portraits I illustrated for ‘Call to Arms: The Soldier and the Revolutionary War’, a special exhibition commemorating the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday at the National Museum of the United States Army (NMUSA). Open to the public from June 2025-2027. 🥁🪈🇺🇸

So if your neighbor, school, or local organization is hosting a "lūʻau" or hulu night, please remember my culture is not a theme or a costume, but a precious gift handed down to my people from our ancestors.

Many do not and could not know the truth behind these stereotypes without learning the history of the Hawaiian Kingdom, however ignorance has never been an excuse to misuse elements from someone's culture. Especially when that culture was intentionally pushed to near extinction.

My name is Tracie kaleonahenaheokalani Ching, I am Kānaka Maoli born on O’ahu + hold a degree in Hawaiian Studies. I know all too well how/why Hawaiian + Pasifika culture was exotified, coopted, + turned into stereotypes - the "Hawaiian" shirts, faux lei, grass skirts + coconuts bras to name a few.
