belated birthday gift for a friend

unique components of water are reflections, transparency, movement. generally the deeper the water the less transparent so you dont have to bother with it always. in this piece theres a reflection from the sky (the ripples are bluer than the rest of the water) as well as surrounding objects like the white of the houses. I achieve this by drawing on a new layer and lowering the opacity. Or just use a low opacity brush. I go over a bit with another brush to show dimension. The water here is fairly calm so there's fewer ripples, they're farther apart, and similar in color to the base to be subtle.

getting started means identifying your components. I more or less random scribble at the start. this is sort of also to build a palette. There's sky reflection, probably rocks in the distance reflecting light. the water is transparent here so prepare the color of rocks. i chose ripples that are inbetween the color of the shirt and the water. you want both dark colors to represent the solid object and lighter colors to represent light. the water is transparent so some of the original shirt color is underwater but not as much as the water's colors.

to get the final result, more or less just painting to refine the ripple shape and add more ripples, airbrushing, introducing more ripples and reflection. finally I did a bunch of color adjustments (tone curve, color balance.) The light in this piece is strong but the water is also more displaced so the ripples are a stronger light color. I love airbrushing over my ripples and stuff to sort of create a smooth feeling and to help the transition between colors like the rocks and water. this is what my airbrushing looked here its in normal mode at 50% ish opacity.

colors: a lot of your colors will be inbetweens, inbetween your base and the shadows, inbetween the base and what's underwater, inbetween your base and reflecting light. light from rippling water appear on the surface of the water... but also on the objects under the water. the more transparent the water the more the underwater objects show. these ripples can really sell that something is underwater instead of dry. the process is something like draw rocks next to the water, adding a yellower tone to the water and a greener tone to the rocks, adding ripples.

oh god idk if this is helpful but its shit like this. a lot of my recent examples are teal/greenish water but the principle is the same no matter what color water there is. i havent drawn ocean waves in ages tho

This was my actual beginner steps starting out. Like I learned hue shift but it wasn’t coming out right. Turns out it’s likely your values. And even mixing novice colors and tweaking tone can help.
