Quick reminder: Downloading that new brush pack for your digital software isn’t going to improve your art. Not unless you understand how that tool is supposed to work first.

Much like you wouldn’t use a hammer to make cement, you have to know you wouldn’t use a mapping pen to fill in spot-blacks.

For sure. I’ve always done my layouts in my sketchbook. That part of my process has never been digital for me. And there’s something so satisfying (to me) about finishing a page and then almost ritualistically washing the ink out of all my tools.

The basic ones for sure. But I tell you it’s harder and harder to find pen nibs. Cause you can’t find them in your big box art supply stores, people think the “G-pen” “turnip pen” and “mapping pen” are the default brushes in clip studio paint, rather than real analog pens.

The whole idea that “good” or “real” art needs to be digital via expensive software and equipment has filtered down from tech bros to my younger students. They can’t even imagine that there are analog ways to do literally everything, and it’s been done analog for centuries. (Millennia even)
