So because some of the voluntary groups I volunteer for still use Meta, I have to spend time trying to fight Facebook and by God it is at times not easy.

- Some political historian in 50 years
I've used to create 3 documents in about 20 years, largely because I wanted to see if it was still there and worked.
Honestly, hasn't changed since I accidentally did a school assignment in it in the 1990s because I didn't know Word existed.
I've just had some terrible news. Please sit down if you're not sitting or pull over if you're reading this driving, especially if drinking and driving.
Support for Microsoft Publisher will cease in October 2026.
Thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
Don't worry, I still love you

(In all seriousness, I think it's purely a taste thing. Like there are people who dislike The Wire having not suffered a serious head injury.)
Having seen many PowerPoint presentations and having done research into the delivery of PowerPoint presentations, I am pretty confident that 99.9% of people cannot communicate flexibly in academic and/or work situations.
Let's just deport everybody.
Don't read The Lord of the Rings, just watch the films.

14.10.2025 12:55 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0You canโt be an effective party for successful people in midlife (sort of the *point* of the Tory party ultimately) if you are at odds with them over the most consequential thing you did in office. This weekโs column:

I'm not particularly au fait with the fitness influencer world (which may, just *may*, have the odd grifter) but a friend and I have been entertaining ourselves with the whole "is Mike Israetel's PhD real?" debacle.
14.10.2025 09:04 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I bang on about this a lot: I think the combination of a global pandemic, underregulated internet/SM, collapse/corruption of trustworthy media, plus now unregulated genAI, is a wildly toxic environment for radicalisation & mental health. We see the results of that in our politics & lives every day
13.10.2025 07:00 โ ๐ 783 ๐ 197 ๐ฌ 23 ๐ 10than I'm suggesting here but it seems pretty shit that you can't even find the "new" newsletter.
Probably do need to close the old Substack account.
I have told people to search "secular sheffield". This takes them to the new beehiiv newsletter on both DuckDuckGo and Bing. It's about the 4th result and the Substack account of being visible.
Google finds the Substack but the beehiiv account is nowhere to be seen.
This is likely more complex
Enshittification - an example
I have a monthly newsletter about events of interest to non-religious folk in Sheffield. It is called "Secular Sheffield".
I moved from Substack at the start of the year because Nazis.. I haven't posted on Substack since January. But...

14.10.2025 07:10 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The IRA and the British Army were famously friendly until then so really Northern Ireland just provided a convenient spot to hang out. All ruined by that priest, aggressively waving his white flag at British troops.

14.10.2025 06:19 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Similarly true with music. I run Sunday Assembly Sheffield, a secular gathering with songs, speakers and socialising.
It's challenging to find sufficiently well-known modern pop and rock songs such that everybody can sing along. In 1996 *everybody* had heard Wannabe whether they liked it or not.
I still dial my parents' landline number into my phone
