Your small palette stuff is so cool
Impressive how you can communicate so much with just a handful of colors

Haven't posted in a while. Here's a cool WIP!

23.07.2025 19:32 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Wow, that looks gorgeous! I've always wanted to experiment with this perspective where the floor is tilted towards the camera, but I could never quite figure out how to get the lighting right. Do you put normal maps on the ground for more realistic shading, or something else? How do you do shadows?

Just found out about elephant rats
This is me this is who you're talking to
Cool, thanks!
Out of curiosity, what do you use Rust for?
Drew this during a bad bout of insomnia.

I hope this helps!!! I'm still a beginner and I've got a lot to learn, so don't take my word as gospel. Feel free to reply/dm me if you have any more questions!
21.06.2025 07:21 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 03) I grab textures online and use layer blending modes to make flat areas more interesting. I keep it subtle or else it'll look noisy.
4) For fonts, I sacrifice readability for visual appeal. Let's face it: almost no one reads the text anyway, so I'd rather make it confusing/fun over clear/plain.
A couple tips and tricks I use to make my art pop:
1) check out the convolution tool in aseprite. I use the blur feature to create bloom on the lights.
2) I place fog between layers to assist silhouette readability. Another great use of the convolution tool for soft, transparent shapes.
I couldn't figure out how to texture the big building until I thought about mazes that mice run in labs. Check out Brandon James Greer if you want to get better!
21.06.2025 07:16 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Details! Any time I thought there were unnecessary blank areas, I included references to rats. For example, there was an empty space in Augmentation, so I added a window with two rats kissing! The PimentHotel is named after my favorite cheese and features mousehole windows.
21.06.2025 07:16 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Texturing is difficult to get right. I use only 3-4 colors per layer, so it's difficult to find texturing methods that don't pop too much. I experimented for a while until I found @6vcr. She uses repeated patterns on a grid with minor variations, which helped with Kharkevich and Recon.
21.06.2025 07:15 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0The four military buildings in the foreground are great examples of how I approach character design. The Reconnaissance building is shaped like an air traffic control tower, Augmentation has futuristic features, Training is a cheaply designed building for new recruits, etc.
21.06.2025 07:13 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I approach building design like character design. What function does the building serve? How old is it? What do people do inside? How does the building present itself to pedestrians? Answering these questions allows me to start sculpting a building's silhoutte and form a plan.
21.06.2025 07:12 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0For Steeltooth City, I started by imagining what a city of rats would need and how their buildings would look. I pictured a monument to their monarch at the heart of the city, residential buildings in the middle, and military on the outskirts. I blocked out simple rectangles for a skeleton.
21.06.2025 07:11 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Someone asked me to explain how I got better at art so buckle up.
When I first started I used a lot of tutorials: youtube.com/shorts/KTYf6...
Honestly, I felt guity about using tutorials. It felt like I was creating art that wasn't mine. But looking back, tutorials boosted my confidence enormously.
Oh cool! Now you don't have to manually enter codes
