The way we are introduced back to Sverkel in his second appearance is in an interaction where he and Snake bicker as he cooks. It's clear this conversation has happened before and it goes the same way. Sverkel is doing the good and worthy work of pushing back against the evil of those he lives with.

Rewatching vinland saga season 2. It's insanely good. The relationship between snake and sverkel is so much more intricate with the second viewing. Sverkel and Ketil too. The frail old man tilling away at land has the most to say, and it works.
