The problem with snark is that, on a good day, it's about a tenth as clever as you think it is.

The ice agents with families are worse because they understand what they are doing.

People really believe in standing up for what you believe in right up until someone does it

If you can understand how "not touching you" can be an attack, you're apparently more equipped than most to understand how pretext works

Absolute truth without fact checking is like a vegetarian who only eats salads made entirely of meat, and who goes on and on and on and on about how you really should be a vegetarian too.

Complexity and nuance, eh? I'm beginning to start to imagine I suspect that this morality business is somehow tricky...

What do the stoics say, @tannerocampbell.bsky.social ?

Should we criticize mistaken thinking, let it be without concern, or some third thing?

01.04.2025 22:11 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 1

I am certainly no expert (nor a stoic) but I was trying to point at the underlying absurdity of a "stoic" being *angry* that the *world is unfair* evidenced by *people are critical of me*.

A man with heavy boots and suspenders is holding an axe is smoking a cigar with his leg propped up on a log. Text reads "Masculinity isn't toxic. The lack of it is. Weak men are abusive, manipulative, and spiteful. Strong, stoic, masculine men are protective and loving."

They've talked themselves in so many circles about a war on men that they've discovered toxic masculinity.

This meme inherits a problematic and unreflective understanding of stoicism (you're angry because you're persecuted for being so stoic? Is... stoicism in the room now?)

but... it's something

If oppression was a unique function of government, you could simply cut it off and be done. If it can be imagined that in such an anarchy some might find an oppressive advantage over others then you've solved nothing, and any system you invent against that oppression is by definition a government.

The world is made of people, and government is just one thing that we do. It's reasonable to be frustrated when that organization method fails, but all we've ever had is each other.
Everything. is. labor.
Grow some food and make some friends. Help where you can and ask for help when you need it.

One objection I've never heard to running a government like a business is that no one has ever seen a democratically run business.

"Universal healthcare is socialism, and socialism is bad" is weird. Like... the main problem with Stalin that you've landed on is that he wanted people to be able to afford chemo?

Isn't it crazy and inexplicable that home insurance is more expensive for a $50 million house than a $50 thousand house?

yeah, that's the gist of why the rich pay more taxes, and if you can't get that across then there's not much use arguing further.

I do this thing where I take things that conservatives are done with and earmark them for adoption.

Like bible verses and the constitution and "give me liberty or give me death" and states rights. I try to not worry about hypocriticality... it's just free real estate.

it's free real estate.

It just seems like- if you had a spaceship full of the thousand people you need to restart society on another planet, none of the people you would take are particularly well cared for in the current arrangement. It might behoove you to not literally force them to notice that.

The second guy has declared bankruptcy (perhaps multiple times), but he wants me to be mad that the first guy is having trouble paying back predatory student loans. Now the first guy’s healthcare is being taken away so that the second guy can contribute LESS to society.

When the guy at the window does a good job I get delicious food. When he does a bad job I get soggy fries. When the fund manager does a good job I see nothing, when he does a bad job the entire economy collapses and that guy at the window becomes harder to justify visiting.

We train young men to drop fire on people but their commanders won't allow them to write FUCK on their airplanes because it's obscene. -Col Kurtz, Apocalypse Now

Winning the definition of obscene is the most important thing you can do in your circles.

Cutting kits health insurance?

Obscene.

If humanity's only hope was 1000 people on a spaceship traveling to restart on another planet, why are none of the people you actually need currently among the best cared for members of society? Are we not all here, on a spaceship, trying to make humanity work?

Think of a thing that is not a combination of dirt and labor.

That is the most radicalizing realization I have ever realized.

'I must win' feels like a puzzle and 'my opponent must lose' feels like an action item, even if they are often (evolution historically) approximately the same. It seems like a decent heuristic maybe worth the brain calories in deep time. To your point, the asteroid can do one but not the other.
