The Romans were ardent pet lovers. Dogs especially were great favorites and are frequently depicted in Roman art as either guard or hunting dogs. This bronze fitting depicts a dog lying on the ground, his head erect and floppy ears pricked up, with a distinctive mane of long hair surrounding its face, and on its neck and back - a close match for a type known as a Molossian (a well-known life size marble statue of a Molossian is in the British Museum). His eyes are somewhat ‘derpy’, not quite aligned, which makes him goofy and cute.

Roman, 2nd-3rd century CE.

This terracotta of a pet dog - a type of Roman lap dog seen in other types of art, with a curly tail and upright ears - still carries traces of its original pigments, particularly the pink color which would have been between the legs on all four sides. The dog was probably white, perhaps with yellow (not sure if the yellow spots are pigment).

The front of the altar is carved in high relief with the figure of the deceased, named in the accompanying, elegantly carved Latin inscription as Anthus. The altar was set up by his father, L(ucius) Iulius Gamus. Although Anthus’ age is not given, he clearly died while still a child, since he is referred to as “(his) sweetest son,” and a personal touch is given to the relief by showing Anthus with his pet dog.

Note that although Anthus was a child, he's shown clutching a scroll, which would normally only be shown in the hands of young men and adults who are learned. Additionally, Anthus is wearing a too-large toga, perhaps an adult male's toga virilis. Both of these items are things that Anthus could not have achieved or worn - and, hence, they may be about the hopes that his father had for his son's future. A future that was now lost. Tellingly, no name of a mother has been added to this altar, meaning she probably predeceased Anthus, perhaps soon after his birth.

Anthus will forever be with his puppy, a sweet farewell from his father.

If there’s an afterlife, I want the first thing I see to be all of my companion dogs and cats, waiting for me across the rainbow bridge. The #Romans loved their dogs as well, and reflected it in their art. Bronze Molossian, terracotta Maltese, and a chubby puppy of some kind. 🏺 1/
