I study how bacteria kill plants. Interested across biological scales: molecular 🧬, cellular🦠, organismal 🧫, ecological πŸ₯€πŸŒ, and evolutionary 🧬. Optimistic pessimist: The world is dark, so how can we slow the decline?

Universal healthcare, universal childcare, public health, education, cancelling student loans, science and research funding, welfare programs are all much better uses of that much money.

This is a good week to be way too busy to keep up with the news.

I've realized why I hate AI's usage of emdashes. It uses emdashes to create zig-zaggy sentences. Strong scientific writing takes complex ideas and lays them out linearly

Congress gears up for vote on Trump’s war powers in Iran β€” after the battle began Democrats and a few Republicans are calling for curbing Trump’s unilateral use of military power in Iran, despite previous such efforts failing to advance.

Congress is set to vote on bipartisan war powers resolutions this week meant to limit President Trump's military operations in Iran.

The dual efforts in the House and Senate face uphill battles to become law, as previous efforts have failed in asserting congressional authority to declare war.

They went to war with Iran (which nobody in America was asking for) so they could conjure an excuse to allow ICE to keep murdering Americans and teargassing schools here at home with impunity (which nobody in America was asking for).

I genuinely think this is because Trump met some quantum physics, quantum chemistry, or quantum computing professors while partying with fellow sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

The "fun" thing about Epstein helping to fund sleezebag scientists' labs is that the funding allowed the sleezebags to hire more graduate students and postdocs to sexually harass.

I have a male friend who spent some time in Axel's lab. About the 3rd conversation he had with Axel, Axel broke the ice with "So, have you fucked [a female postdoc in the lab] yet?"

My friend was horrified...

If Pete is the democratic candidate, I hope that voters to the left of his policy priorities are willing to vote for him.

A further Republican president will be worse for trans people, unions, Palestinians, Ukranians, women, immigrants, brown people, white men, blue collar workers

I respect your opinion. I will vote Pete in a primary. I encourage you to vote for a more left policy candidate to drive the policy progressive.

But I am an optimistic pessimist. I used to believe in making the world a better place. Now, I believe in slowing the decline.

This video is also amazing. Pete builds policy by talking to Americans from diverse backgrounds and talking to/reading writing from experts who study societal things.

He is a solutions person. He is almost certainly thinking about the specifics of those solutions.

Great questions!

I encourage you to watch his long-form policy interviews, especially the Q&As at college. They are 1 hour sessions recorded on YouTube. I binged last August and was so blown away. I understand that an hour is a long time, but I really really think nerds will enjoy it
