Miquella is standing in a river in the dreaming/spirit world with the Formless Mother looming over him, one of her arms plunged though his chest. Behind Miquella, his body has split into the form of St Trina, their bodies connected by strands of unalloyed gold. Her ribs are visible as she clutches the heart the Formless Mother is reaching for to her chest. Both Miquella and St Trina have their hands grasping for a shattered piece of amber starlight as nascent butterflies fly away through the reeds which are bending towards golden light in the top right corner.

Miquella settled between her legs, lifting her bandaged one up to rest her foot against his thigh. Though he’d done this many times before, in the past it had always been her hand or arm - never her leg and never so much of her body. He started at the sole of her foot, slowly pulling the bandages away and revealing what was concealed beneath. The necrosis had already set in as evident by the discolored skin covered in dark weeping blisters, worse than he had ever seen before. Miquella faltered at the sight, glancing up at his sister who was watching him, her hand tightly gripping the sheet at her side. “Am I hurting you?” “No,” Malenia was quick to reassure him. “No, I just wish you did not have to see this, to see me like this.”
