It’s clay reclaim day in my tiny apartment studio. First I’m drying out old blocks of clay on the front stoop, then hammering the dried clay into chunks to slag down in a bucket. Then the clay is dried on plaster bats. When it feels right, I wedge the slop back into clay and make something from it.

Fellow New Jerseyans! Next Thursday, in Keyport, NJ, is the very first Collective Creativity. An Open Mic event featuring the musical talents of Renee Maskin. I will be the featured artist, bringing along some pottery and my carnivorous plant babies for sale!

Here are my test tiles for a local Jersey wild clay that I mixed with porcelain. From left to right, we have cone 05 ox, cone 6 ox, cone 10 ox, cone 10 red, cone 10 red w/ clear glaze, and cone 10 “ fake woodfire” featuring a shino dipped in too much wood ash. I’m underwhelmed by it 😕

Oftentimes I start with pinch pots but I’m starting to like building solid. Gives me a little more freedom when deciding gesture.

It doesn’t need to be hollowed out. But! It would then be imperative that the piece is fully dried before firing. Despite being built as a solid sculpture, I did cut this guy in half and hollow him out, mainly because I didn’t want him to be a paper weight 😂
