I think it's a safe assumption that decisionmakers were blindsided, but even so: yeah.

The way this has worked in the past (providers really did do a verify and discard) and the way it's shaping up now (intermingling of these systems due to nebulous or hostile state actors) has altered that deal.

Also, impressed y'all managed to get (most of?) the preferences menu and the whole achievement system ported to Switch. I can only imagine. It deserves (1) real coffee for making that go.

It's interesting how much of it is informed by how this used to be hardware supply chain. The fundamental supply chain difference between computer software and stuff with long supply chains... yeah. YEAH.

Empathy and y'all got this. But dang, the time gaps in just being able to see and ship stuff.

Addendum: it is a good idea to be distrustful of any system that caches personal info. The priorities of the service provider may change, adding risks associated with trusting them.

A lot hinges on whether Persona did their checks in isolation then discarded it. If that does not hold up: ooooof.

Good:

This is mostly me thinking out loud, so please do not post any of that here. But I'm very curious in how this develops.

Specifics I'm interested in more on:

1. Claims that they retain info for 3y (what info? This could be legal requirements like SOX)

2. Whether they pass info directly to government databases (which may retain a copy, why, what info?)

3. Whether they expose sensitive info others claim to have found

But yeah. At this time, this makes me consider using Persona harmful, full stop. I'd bet a shiny nickel orgs that trusted them are evaluating similarly.

I'm curious enough to do my own technical deep dive on this to learn more, because this is absolutely wild.

I think it's safe to say that more than a few folks are similarly angry right now.

They positioned themselves as a trusted party before specific governments started using age verification and identity services for spying and disenfranchisement, and folks are more than correct to distrust them.

I'm also angry because I will be in their database due to VRC age verification, which uses Persona's services.

Historically, identity provider services have needed to run a very tight ship to be trusted. These findings breach that trust. I expect it will have impact on providers using them.

Worth a read, along with the technical deep-dives.

Ignoring Discord's own breach, Persona presented itself as a "verify and discard" identity verification system that did not preserve info, and that did not hold up to technical scrutiny.
