In a statement to The Crimson, Summers wrote that the decision to leave was β€œdifficult” and that he remained β€œgrateful to the thousands of students and colleagues I have been privileged to teach and work with since coming to Harvard as a graduate student 50 years ago.”

β€œFree of formal responsibility, as President Emeritus and a retired professor, I look forward in time to engaging in research, analysis, and commentary on a range of global economic issues,” he added.

When academia's stars mistreat people, they're "punished" with relief from teaching, mentoring, and service responsibilities. This frees them to spend more time on the more valued work of research. And dumps less valued responsibilities onto colleagues, making it harder for them to become stars.

Thread: imagine you're a historian surveying 16th century copies of the world's most famous ancient astronomy book, and you see one where somebody with handwriting VERY similar to GALILEO (!?) has transcribed... a psalm.

"Galileo, a prayer? That's something that doesn't work," Ivan Malara thought.

It's unusual for the Secretary of Defense to spend this much time obsessing about children's genitalia, but I guess that's sort of the main theme of the second Trump administration.

How Kansas Republicans weaponized the law to target 300 trans driver's license holders SB 244 was put into effect virtually overnight, causing chaos, panic and fear in the trans community.

New β€” I spoke to eight trans people in Kansas about the new state law that invalidated their driver’s licenses overnight, what’s it’s like to live there right now, plus details of two DMV emails exclusively obtained by The Handbasket that shed light on the law’s chaotic and cruel rollout:

You can always tell an institution’s values based off of how it *spends* money.

Even in capitalism, the goal isn’t straightforwardly to make money. It’s about power.

And some things are considered worthless no matter the monetary gains while others are considered valuable no matter the cost.

Robin D. G. Kelley: It’s Not Enough to Abolish ICE β€” We Have to Abolish the Police β€œWhat’s happening now has happened before,” Kelley said, underscoring the anti-Blackness foundational to US fascism.

Premature death at the hands of armed agents of the state is merely a hazard of being Black in America. It’s not enough to β€œabolish ICE”; we have to abolish the police force and replace it with a radically different form of public safety.
