Brave, visionary and queer: the Bohemian brilliance of author George Sand With her radical politics and flamboyant affairs, Sand was no stranger to controversy, but itโ€™s time to debunk the myths surrounding a writer ahead of her time

Resisting Dialogue A bold new critique of dialogue as a method of eliminating dissent Is dialogue always the productive political and communicative tool it is widely conceived ...

For anyone who's contemplating the use of dialogue and debate for pure and cynical spectacle these days, I have a book for you:

New image reveals secrets of Milky Way galaxy in stunning detail Largest ever image obtained by specialist telescope in Chile represents scientific and aesthetic breakthrough

Stunning image. Glad this is presented as both a scientific AND an aesthetic breakthrough. Highlights the role of aesthetics not only to appreciate but literally to register in its complexity the mind-numbing idea of imagining ourselves (or not) in the picture.

Or, err, no aesthetics no party...

Enough about books in dialogue with other books, with traditions, with ideas. I want them sitting across the room furiously pretending to ignore each other. Books on non-speaking terms! Books that glare and point! Books storming out of the room crying!

A new addition to my JANE AUSTEN GUIDE TO FACULTY MEETINGS (an intermittent series):

From Northanger Abbey, ch. 8--

Has "snake ai-oli" already been coined? If not, you're welcome! My only concern would be ruining the majestic sauce that aioli is.

It is called "mise en slopรฎme" when nostalgia slop recalls something people don't know or remember, becoming nostalgia for slop without referent, isn't it? A "sloaping signifier" if you like

I agree this is a critical symptom of the larger culture/social landscape. The exploitation of the internet to destroy our ability to disagree is a disaster. The obverse of this is the distortion of what counts as dialogue.
