This was a choice, not an inevitability. The program has saved Milwaukee tenants from hundreds of evictions –and saved our justice system tons of $$ on enforcing unfair evictions. But it wasn’t a priority for the Common Council or the County Board, who only provided short term funding. (2/3)

Property taxes are regressive, falling much harder on the poor and working class (including on tenants when passed through via rent.) Wisconsin’s massive over-reliance on property taxes is squeezing residents out of homes their families have lived in for generations…
