Dear Prime Minister of Norway,
As you are evidently taking requests, I presume you will accept my message.
My cat asks for too many Dreamies.
Please assist me in this matter by reducing the Dreamies my cat wants by 3.
Thankyou for your attention to this matter.

Just come to the realisation that Science is basically the same thing as one of those people that can't help but say "Actually" at absolutely everything and now I hate Science.

Shabana Mahmood's visa ban has one glaring omission. Ducking this country exposes her real plan - Adam Brooks
If Shabana Mahmood were serious, Pakistan wouldβve been the first name out of her mouth, writes publican and broadcaster Adam Brooks
For a while I've been a believer in paying attention to what "alternative" news sources have as their output (esp. as they command an increased share of the audience) and if this opinion piece doesn't summarise why Labour kowtowing to the right won't work idk what will www.gbnews.com/opinion/shab...

The idea that someone who has arrived as a refugee in the UK (or anywhere) can "easily" return to their country of origin after years of living their life in the UK is insanity. Yet Labour's Steven Reed suggested this very thing this morning on BBCR4

Ensuring that weβre all free and protected, all of us, should be a key priority for anyone thinking about which way they intend to vote going forward. And thatβll do for now. This ended up longer than I thought it would be, but hey, thatβs freedom for you.

But be normal about it for christ sakes; informing doesnβt mean lecturing. But the more normalised leaving the ECHR becomes in the UK, the more dangerously likely it is that Political parties across the spectrum will consider it as a reasonable action.

And yes, this is oversimplified as an explanation but thatβs the point. Thereβs also no point in sitting going βhmm, yes, the ECHR is important after all.β Tell your parents, friends, grandparents, whatever - Go speak to another human being and explain to them why this matters to all of us.

The ECHR doesnβt just protect foreigners, it protects every single person in the UK. Getting rid of the ECHR is effectively a βcut your nose off to spite your faceβ situation; in the long term nobody really wins and the UK becomes more like the US.

A Government being able to do whatever it wants is bad, by the way. It isnβt a matter of sovereignty when a Government is able to ignore the people - that road leads to Authoritarianism and State control.

Weβre protected from exploitative practices in our employment, weβre protected from Police overreach, weβre protected from Government overreach. Remove the ECHR and suddenly these things are under threat, and the UK can kind of do whatever it wants.

Ultimately, a lot of what has created contemporary βBritish Cultureβ is due to the ECHR and HRA 1998 - There are huge factors in our personal lives that are the way they are because of this legislation. We are able to act and exist as we do because of the ECHR.

Article 15 - 18 are largely about situations in which certain Human Rights are not to be applied (e.g. Wartime) and are there to ensure that States such as the UK are able to act in an emergency situation without being constricted. You know, as they should.

Discrimination can happen against anyone and Article 14 even establishes that political discrimination is prohibited. Thatβs why we can have folk paint England flags on roundabouts or go on BBC QT over 50 times and whine about not being given a voice. Theyβre allowed.

Article 14 protects you from discrimination. Now, you might think βwell I want to be able to discriminate against them minoritiesβ but itβs protecting you, too. White men are losing a lot of political capital (apparently) but they canβt be discriminated against. Checkmate, feminists.

Article 13 provides you the right to say βYouβre infringing on my Human Rights you massive dickheadβ and then have something done about it. You know, legalising your right to defend yourself using the rights granted by the ECHR.

Article 12 is about you having the right to marry and found a family; importantly, however, this holds that you may only do so in accordance with the national laws - an important example of how the ECHR doesnβt impact sovereignty and instead invites it.

Article 11 covers that stuff by the way - freedom of assembly, including Trade Unions. Yeah, okay, Unions are seen in a negative light a lot of the time, but at least you can choose between joining them or not. At least the option exists for you.

Free Speech and Thought are important to everybody, regardless of political, religious or ideological affiliation - The UK being backwards on this stuff is not a good thing, whether youβre bigging up the Israel massive like Tommy R or holding up a page of Private Eye at a protest.

Article 9 and 10 are about your freedom of thought and expression. Now, the UK is actually a little backwards in this arena and is being rightfully challenged on that. But if you enjoy being able to say and think whatever you want then this Articles 9 and 10 are for you.

Cannibals is maybe a bit of an extreme example, but thatβs the type of situation where you give up this right (another example of how the ECHR doesnβt impact prevention of crime). The point is that youβre allowed to exist privately and independently.

Article 8 is about a cornerstone of classical conservative thinking; you have a right to respect for your private and family life. The government should not be able to intervene in what you do within the comfort of your own home and family, unless youβre cannibals.

Articles 6 and 7 are all about your right to a fair trial and a punishment that exists within the confines of the law. Everybody is equal under the law and the law is equal to everyone. βInnocent until proven guiltyβ is also enshrined here.

In here too is the right for you to defend yourself if you find yourself on the wrong side of the law, which, you know, is actually another cornerstone of the UK Legal System that existed even before the ECHR. In fact, the UK is pretty famous for setting the tone there.

But, a cornerstone of the UK Legal System is here too - if you are arrested you have the right to know - in a language you understand, which includes Geordie - why you are being arrested. This means the police canβt just ICE you out.

Article 5 is all about how free you are. You have the right to be free and secure in that freedom. Again, though, there are provisions for situations of lawful arrest and even detaining a person to stop the spread of an infectious disease.

Article 4 is all about ensuring that nobody can be held in slavery or forced to work, including compulsory labour. However, things like e.g. community service as punishment for a crime are exempt, as are things like disaster response.

But thatβs not all, of course - Inhuman or Degrading treatment is quite subjective (and in some cases welcomed, oi oi) but in an instance where you do not consent or are otherwise being subjected to such a thing, guess what, youβre protected.
