“Duh.”

Hermione snuggled up to him, forgetting about the wall and clinging to his body, “What about cuddling by a fire?”

“Darling, I’ll keep the fire burning all night just to hold you longer.”

“And if I get too hot?”

Draco smiled and as he leaned in to kiss her he said, “I’ll bring the ice.”

When Hermione looked up at Draco, he was reluctantly smirking, then glowing as he pulled her toward him, hiding his smile in the crook of her neck.

“Maybe we can warm up together?” Draco asked, as he glided his hands over her waist and hips.

“Mmm, it depends. Can there be hot cocoa later?”

When Draco let out a huff, she felt a tingle in her stomach. She threw a hand over her mouth as a rumble of laughter bubbled up, escaping before she could stop it. She practically doubled over as she felt her nerves loosen for the first time in weeks.

Hermione tried moving toward him. “What’s wrong, what did you hurt?” She was reaching for her wand with her one free hand.

“Just… my pride.”

“Oh.” Hermione took in the way he was avoiding her questioning eyes.

When he finally made eye contact with her, he had reddened cheeks and a scowl between his brows.

“Are you okay?”

“…No.”

When Draco suddenly fell. Straight onto his arse.

He hadn’t hit his head, but he was clearly shell-shocked. Draco crawled to the edge of the rink on his hands and knees, lifting himself up with all the grace of a newborn giraffe.

Draco looped around, coming back toward her, and the terror returned to her body. Hermione knew he would want her to make an effort, and she so badly wanted to enjoy this with him. When he was seconds away from her, she lifted one of her hands, reaching for him…

He was a natural, with straight ankles and perfectly poised posture. She could watch him from this spot all afternoon and be happy.

She watched him as he turned and glided away from her, smoothly and politely weaving around the other skaters, kicking his feet out at every turn. He was beautiful on the ice, the way he’d always been during quidditch.

Draco retreated with a soft smile on his face and said, “How about I take a lap to warm up, and then we’ll try again, okay?”

Hermione nodded and said, “Alright.”

When she looked up, she saw Draco’s hand outstretched, reaching for her. Hermione felt her eyes widen at him, as she silently shook her head so vigorously she saw stars.

The wall was solid, but she couldn’t move. Her knees locked into place as she tried desperately to get her legs to shift forward. She looked down at her traitorous limbs and willed them to comply.

Hermione let Draco pull her up and to the edge of the rink, where she gripped the edge so tightly her knuckles cracked. As she tried to steady herself, he effortlessly eased backward, never taking his eyes off her.

When he finished with her skates, he held her gloved hands - thank the gods, if he felt how clammy they were she would die - and told her they could take it as slow as she wanted.

Despite her nerves, she didn’t want to disappoint him. He’d been so excited when she agreed, and had spent the whole trip over assuring her he wouldn’t be a show-off.

That was two weeks ago, and now here she was, asking for her shoe size at the counter, and taking her time fiddling with the zipper on her jacket. When her hands trembled too much to lace up the skates, Draco graciously dropped to a knee and did them up for her.

Hermione knew all of the tricks on how to maintain balance, ease away from the wall, and glide across the ice without falling.

In theory, she knew what to do. When Draco first proposed going ice skating on their sixth date, Hermione had agreed with enthusiasm. She then proceeded to nervously bite her nails for three whole days while she read every book on the subject.
