Stain is me trying to figure out how to blend high sci-fi with high fantasy with some modern touches. Main characters are two bratty mage apprentices trying to get their magic licenses back by doing magic community service. It's been a fun project to write/worldbuild for so far.

Dungeon Clown for one of the many projects I got in the oven, the name for this one is "Stain"

I had to pull up photo ref of the moon because ppl did not believe the moon would block the stars still when it’s in the crescent phase.

But I keep my tutorials pretty basic now.

I would do more rendering bg specific stuff but after I tried doing one about night scenes and how you probs shouldn’t put clouds behind the moon or stars in the moon during crescent phase. Ppl got mad. I got some asking me based on what and I’m like science? Going outside at night???

I had to redo some of the BG because I lost the original final PSD but had a earlier saved state on Gdrive somewhere. I didn't think I grew that much in 3 years but layering this out for people to paint on I saw how much I've grown.

If you read the second part I mean cartoons aimed at kids. I work in animation, I can tell you it’s boiled down to very sweet narratives and bright outcomes. They are comforting stories. It’s not bad to have a sweet tooth for narrative but it’s good to have variety in your diet as a writer.

One teaches comfort and the other teaches complexity. Both do feed the soul just different cravings. If you’re striving be a writer I think it’s good to eat a variety of flavors.You can still add sugar to lemon and come out with something more interesting than just sugar.

Have you never felt slightly bitter after an interaction with another human? Have you never felt soured that a conflict didn’t end the way you wanted it too? Being an adult has its mix of triumph and tragedy.

Whereas when we’re a kid and watching children media we’re only fed bright outcomes.

Strawberries? Tart. Cooking chocolate? Bitter. Lemon? Sour.

But those flavors paired with sugar elevates BOTH the ingredients to make such a much more complex and savory dish.

Contrast is the spice of life.

Because you’re catering to a younger/general audience you tend to tilt towards sweeter narrative that almost forgets that you can’t just…have a dessert just be only sugar. It needs something bitter or spicy, just something MORE than just sugar cake. You lose complexity and end up w/ something bland.

The new Magma ( magma.com ) brush engine is really nice, the pressure to your lines is getting the brush tool feeling really good.

Gonna QRT this one, if you noticed a big shift in style it's because working on Avatar as a character layout artist in the animation department fundamentally shifted my style a lot. But in a lot of good ways!

I do like when shows I work on change me as an artist and become apart of me.
