A full back with licence to attack needs cover and Mowatt, slow and stodgy lad that he is, isnโ€™t best suited to the role. Molumby is ideal for it so Iโ€™d have him as the left sided CM providing defensive security while Mowatt is right sided and given more freedom to advance and create/shoot.

I donโ€™t disagree but I also donโ€™t think much of Styles. An underwhelming full back.

Itโ€™s either Mason preaching caution or Styles being half arsed. I can believe either.

I assume youโ€™re referring to Grant here, so yes, thatโ€™s his preferred position and role and heโ€™s decent at it, but only ever seems to be played as a winger now where heโ€™s extremely limited.

by Styles, thatโ€™s what enabled the equaliser yesterday, yet thatโ€™s such a rare occurrence and I donโ€™t see why, both are good players who could do more damage as a partnership. Perhaps itโ€™s simply because Mason preaches severe caution, and has sucked all the attacking bravery from this side.

Agreed, said the same all season about the poor quality of service. Finally Price provides that and the striker scores. Grant is never a winger, heโ€™s a forward who can only really find joy if partnered with another striker. Albion should mainly attack down the left with MJ routinely being overlapped

Proper poachers finish from Heggebรธ yesterday. Great to see as heโ€™s had his doubters so far, I can see why but I also see promise in the lad. Lovely cross from Price who should be playing on the right wing supplying that kind of service, not Grant who is not a winger and never has been #WBA

Hate to admit it given the hatchet job he did on Maja a while back, but Dan Ballard is some centre โ€˜arf, and may get himself in the England picture soon if he keeps playing like he has been.

If Mason doesnโ€™t start giving both minutes after the international break then Iโ€™d like an explanation why. Itโ€™s not like Maja and Grant are pulling up trees.

Goals and points. Better. Mason survives, for now.

Nice cross from Price. We absolutely could play him on the right and get two up top, with a less cautious manager that is.

Sounds like Majaโ€™s been shit, Grantโ€™s been his usual self (shit) and Price has been his usual self (quiet). MJ as always the lone spark of any kind. I feel for Mason to an extent as these average attackers will cost him his job sooner or later.

I doubt weโ€™d get anywhere near either of them. Donโ€™t mind where the next guy may be from but Carrick is an up and coming manager with Championship experience. It did fizzle out at Boro but thatโ€™s usually a managers lot these days after 2-3 years at any club.

Iโ€™d see Michael Carrick as a realistic and attractive option.

Low energy football = boring. High energy football is much more fun. Dynamism, pace, โ€œbusting a gutโ€ - it all gets the crowd going. I fear however that the sheer number of games per season now means low energy football is a necessity to cope with fatigue. So much to watch nowโ€ฆ yet itโ€™s not so fun.

06.11.2025 07:36 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Pulis, Allardyce et al were also direct but that was usually low energy football. Slow the game down, frustrate, time waste, play for set pieces. Ugly. Possession football is more aesthetic, but often can be low energy too - many teams cautiously play around at the back nowadays, it can be tedious.

06.11.2025 07:36 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

โ€œDirectโ€ football can be most entertaining. To me, direct means getting the ball forward quicker than most teams, and when this is employed in a high energy fashion, say like Kloppโ€™s Liverpool or the current Newcastle or Bournemouth sides, that can be the best football to watch.

06.11.2025 07:36 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Agreed, it is worse because Irvineโ€™s play style was more attractive and at least he was managing us in the Prem.

05.11.2025 20:15 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Great summary Chris. Reminds me of Alan Irvine, a decent fella and a respected coach, but not a leader. Doomed to fail. I wonder if his grim football is in part a desperation not
to appear a naive young coach, but itโ€™s been extremely tedious and results are getting ever worse.

05.11.2025 20:05 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 1    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Should never have been a short term appointment. Corberan was always over achieving having us in the race for top 6. Then we lost him and a very good keeper. Regression was inevitable but we had the right man to take us forward after a summer of renewal. Instead, we now have a depressing mess.

04.11.2025 22:22 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Didnโ€™t do great there to start with but heโ€™s an experienced manager and they allowed him the time to develop what now looks like a promotion contender team. Whereas we binned off an equally experienced manager way too quickly last season and then appointed a rookie.

I hope Mowbrayโ€™s pissing himself at this. He knew the issues this squad had, knew our attackers lack heart, knew there was a chronic lack of creativity in our side. Letting the grifters in our squad bin him off was shocking decision. I will die on this hill.

Yeah. Wrong job for a rookie. Feel sorry for him in a way, but not that sorry because of the depressing football he has us playing.
