Honestly sometimes I doubt my code when I find a bug, only to figure out it was Unity’s fault. And it’s so annoying if I’ve spent a lot of time debugging and changing my code to try and fix when it’s just like something wrong in the inspector.

The more I do this stuff though, the better I’m able to anticipate what’s going on under the hood and the more I actually understand how everything interacts. I rly feel like I’ve leveled up here in the past month. Feels good to learn.

_Everything_ is more complicated than I think.

I do one thing and I’m like:

β€œDo I need to save the state of this?”
β€œIf not, when do I need to reset the state of this?”
β€œHow does this affect future system I have in mind?”
β€œAre there different cases or game states I need to consider?”

This is what it looks like in sticky notes lol. Black ones are the β€œtasks” and red ones are notes about them, usually when they’re more complicated than I thought lol.

It rly is fun, having an idea for how something should work and making it happen in-game is a feeling like no other. I get to test out so many ideas 🀀

Finished my work today after 1AM to wrap up my first week towards working to a new playtesting build.

Added:
*Story flag system that NPCs and the world can react to

*Estus Flask style healing system, including UI and char animations

*The above touched so many other systems that needed work

a lot of dragon quest feels that way to me, but 7 really makes it feel like very separate little arcs. I think they had to in order to make such a huge game digestible. I’ve never cleared it, I got like 30 hours into the 3ds one so I’m hoping things start being main plot relevant near the end.

08.02.2026 19:33 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

What it really boils down to, to me, is it helps to get rid of the arbitrary feeling some gates in RPGs have.

It’s no longer frustration out of being blocked from progress thru a bunch of different flags.

It’s like of course I can’t progress, I haven’t found the things that help me progress.

Yeah, that was my thought too. Exploration rewards a _thing_ that kept you from progressing.

Like I said, most jrpgs already do this in a way, but usually plot driven and not exploration driven.

Having a _thing_ to collect that unlocks progression is very β€œvideogame”-y and less β€œstory”-y lol

I think it’s also interesting that progression is _mostly_ gated via collectibles.

It makes for an overarching goal that is omnipresent in your adventure, hanging over the smaller goals you’re engaging with in the middle of the loop.

I don’t think it’s better/worse, but just an interesting choice

In DQ7, I imagine they wanted to make a huge world, but meticulously gating such a world would be near impossible.

So what if the world was small? And gradually got bigger?

It’s the same principle in other RPGs, you get dripfed explorable terrain, just made very tangible and visible.

08.02.2026 18:57 β€” πŸ‘ 9    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

In Pokemon it’s HMs, in FF4 it’s vehicles and story flags, in persona 5 it’s sending a calling card.

They’re all gates to progress, and it’s usually there to make sure the player has done or seen things they need to.

You need to keep in mind the explorable area to hunt for those keys you need.

Playing dq7 and thinking about how it flips a lot of jrpg progression structures.

The loop is the same: you find a new area, learn about its problems, fix the problem, and then move onto the next

How you move on differs. Most games there’s a whole world and something stopping you from exploring it

I'm of a similar mind, yeah.

I think people get feelings over it because they want other people to appreciate aspects of the original they enjoyed. Including devs making new games.

The joy of hunting for something and finding it without the game telling you where to go exactly is a real loss.
