I really have to stop reading clickbait article titles. Wait, you mean this adaptation of a popular comic book has "six awkward parallels" to a prior adaptation of the same popular comic book? I'm completely shocked by this! Exactly how many times have we seen Batman's origin story again?

Just saw a WeightWatchers commercial mention "access to prescription weight loss medications" and I'm weirded out. I've never put much stock in those diet programs, but I still remember when Ozempic was supposed to be for diabetics. When did weight loss drugs become so ubiquitous?

Naked Gun was surprisingly watchable. A lot of laugh out loud moments for me.

I just saw a clickbait article about the new Pride and Prejudice television series that called it a "reboot of the Keira Knightley film" and I kind of want to hit the writer many times with a nerf bat.

I admit, I don't remember the other examples, but I always thought Geordi got a bit of an unfair shake for the Leah Brahms thing. She had every right to be creeped out, but I don't think they were acquainted, so I feel like it was more like celebrity-fanfiction than sexualizing a colleague.

Bleach maybe. I feel like the girls got involved a lot there. But honestly, most of the examples that come to mind for me are "squad of dudes" types, where the women rarely get to punch anyone. Except maybe her love interest.

I mean, yeah, watching Naruto, I do think Sakura gets the short end of the stick a fair bit of time. But, and admittedly, I haven't watched a lot of more recent anime, but I can't really think of a shounen anime from the same time period that really did a while lot better.

And then there are the complaints about sexism, and there's merit there of course. Especially in shounen anime (it's kind of in the name), but how many of these issues are specific to this one series versus the overall genre?

"The teacher character is terrible because he never actually teaches the kids anything!" Are you sure you're not just watching a shounen anime that skips ahead to when things go wrong? Do the CHARACTERS act like the teacher didn't teach them, or are you just unable to extrapolate?

"Why don't these characters stage a revolution against their terrible society?" Because they're not tumblr leftists and that's not the story being told? It's absolutely fine to be like "I don't like this story because of the pervert character or the awful society" but that's not the same thing.

This is not to say that we can't criticize the genre conventions or the behaviors of the characters of course. But sometimes the answer to "why does the teacher allow the pervert character to act that way?" is "the pervert character has a different connotation in Japanese media than ours."

I'm realizing that tumblr is not the ideal place to read a lot of anime/manga meta, because a LOT of the rhetorical questions and complaints seem to boil down to "why does this follow the general genre conventions of its type?" and "why don't these characters react like Americans/Europeans?"

But if I had a nickel for every time the objectively best character in something was a bowl-cutted man named Guy, well, I'd have two nickels.

The objectively best character is Gai. (Guy?) But he's not my favorite because I have very predictable trash taste. :-D

Besides, I like watching my favorite character suffer, and I'm told he does that in quite a few filler arcs. :-D

"Does this make sense with the timeline established in other episodes?" I read superhero comics, it's fine, we'll just assume he's actually six years old but transformed himself older.

Please give me more episodes that are the kids running around saving random villages, or random character X's surprisingly traumatic backstory.

Also, I unironically love filler episodes. So I'm like the only person in the world who looks at things like "so the final battle concludes in episode 474, but the series doesn't end until 500?" and thinks "sweet. More stupid shit."

I'm really enjoying it! I saw a bit when I was younger, but I'm appreciating it more now. I like how it actually does address some of the standard genre conventions (like the kids aren't actually SUPPOSED to be in danger all the time, that shit just keeps happening anyway.)

The Sannin are all supposed to be 50+, and I know Tsunade has her transformation thing (and I'm not sure why that's not an option either), but Jiraiya's over here indulging in every vice under the sun and looks great.

My biggest takeaway from having watched a shit ton of Naruto episodes twenty years after everyone else: it's kind of bizarre that Orochimaru is so obsessed with youth/immortality but never asks Jiraiya for his skin cream.

I will take a terrible Democrat over a Republican, sure. But there are actually quite a lot of GOOD Democrats out there. And I see no reason to pre-shackle us to a fuckhead when we've got other options.

The idea that Democrats "pushed too hard" on trans issues is just a zombie lie at this point. It never happened, but people have talked themselves into believing it without ever once being able to show a shred of evidence to support it
